Donald J. Trump’s task force, which was allegedly kicked off to uncover evidence of election fraud, has unsurprisingly failed to produce any. Instead, as a neat trick, it has shifted its focus to releasing records from investigations into Trump and his associates, providing material the administration is using to portray the officials who investigated him as having engaged in wrongdoing.
Led by pro-Trump journalist John Solomon, the task force has released documents from special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian election interference and Jack Smith’s investigation into Trump’s handling of classified documents. Trump allies view the records as potentially useful to a separate Justice Department investigation in Florida aimed at prosecuting former officials involved in investigations of the president.
Legal experts and ex-law enforcement officials, however, told The Washington Post that the released records largely reflect standard investigative procedures authorized by the courts. The Florida investigation has issued numerous subpoenas but has—as a surprise to no one—failed to secure any indictments. At the same time, prosecutors have faced resignations and struggled to build a case. Again, not surprising.
