Paul Tudor Jones is shorting stocks in 2027 for one reason

Paul Tudor Jones, the billionaire founder of Tudor Investment Corporation, is betting against the market in 2027 for a reason most investors might not expect.

He told CNBC on Oct. 13, 2026, that he plans to short U.S. equities for every month of 2027, based on one overlooked variable.

When massive private companies go public, they flood the market with new stock, and the same pool of investor capital must stretch to absorb it.

Some of the world’s most valuable private companies are lining up to list their shares on U.S. exchanges during the next 12 months.

Jones believes that wave arrives in 2027, powered by the largest AI initial public offerings (IPOs) in recorded market history.

Jones compares the coming IPO wave to the dot-com crash era

Jones framed his bearish thesis around a supply-and-demand equation that worked in reverse during the four-year bull market from 2022 through 2026, according to CNBC.

Corporate buybacks and mergers steadily retired shares throughout that period, which meant a shrinking pool of available stock drove prices higher.

Supply begins to expand when large private companies list their shares on public exchanges and insiders’ locked-up stock becomes available for open-market sale.

Jones described 2027’s flow picture as the most negative since 2002, drawing a parallel to the stretch from 1998 through 2002 when IPO unlocks made shorting easiest.

Those were the easiest years to be short because you kept having these unlocks that just kept adding supply to the market.

The Nasdaq Composite peaked at 5,048.62 on March 10, 2000, and dropped to 1,114.11 by Oct. 9, 2002, a decline of roughly 78%, according to historical price data from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis.

Goldman Sachs strategist Ben Snider forecast in an Oct. 9, 2026, report that United States equity issuance will reach $600 billion during 2027, Seeking Alpha noted.

The $600 billion figure comes after Goldman’s expected record $675 billion in equity issuance in 2026, surpassing the prior high of $540 billion in 2021.

The AI mega-IPO pipeline stretches across 2027

The share supply pressure Jones warns about is already taking shape as two of the most valuable private companies prepare to enter public markets.

Anthropic, the artificial intelligence company behind the Claude family of models, confidentially filed a draft registration statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission on June 1, 2026.

The company raised $65 billion in a May 2026 funding round that valued it at $965 billion, positioning its IPO among the largest offerings ever attempted.

OpenAI pushed its IPO timeline to 2027 after CEO Sam Altman rejected any valuation below $1 trillion, The New York Times reported.

CFO Sarah Friar has told some associates the company is aiming for a 2027 listing, Reuters confirmed, and OpenAI has already filed a confidential prospectus with the SEC.

These two offerings alone could direct hundreds of billions of dollars in new shares to markets, following SpaceX’s $75 billion IPO in June 2026, which rose to $85.7 billion after underwriters exercised the overallotment option, CNBC reported.

Rising Treasury yields compound the pressure on stocks

Share supply is the core of Jones’s bearish call, but rising borrowing costs are reinforcing that pressure on equity valuations going into the new year.

The 10-year United States Treasury note yield has surged past 5.3% in recent weeks, reaching levels not seen since 2002.

Higher yields reduce what investors are willing to pay for future corporate earnings, because a risk-free 5% government bond return competes directly with uncertain equity gains.

Jones disclosed that he is long oil and expects crude prices to rise another $20 to $25 after the midterm elections, CNBC reported.

Costlier energy would fuel inflation, keep long-term yields elevated, and make it harder for the Federal Reserve to justify interest rate cuts throughout 2027.

He also estimated 60-40 odds that fiscal deficits will force a broader market reckoning, adding yet another headwind to the supply pressure he described.

What the IPO supply wave means for concentrated stock portfolios

Jones is positioning against share supply specifically, and passive index fund holders have the greatest exposure because cap-weighted indexes concentrate in the same mega-cap names.

Ninety One Investment Institute published research in July 2026 showing that shrinking share counts boosted United States equity returns by roughly 0.7 percentage points annually between 2015 and 2025.

The firm warned that the AI IPO wave is putting that decade-long tailwind into reverse, meaning index fund investors now face a headwind against returns.

Nikolaos Panigirtzoglou, managing director of Global Markets Strategy at JPMorgan, projected that net United States equity issuance would reach roughly $200 billion in 2026, up from zero in 2025, Cryptobriefing reported.

BlackRock’s 2026 outlook noted that the 10 largest companies in the S&P 500 now account for roughly 40% of the index’s total market capitalization, raising concentration risk for passive investors.

Jones compared the current market to 1999, warning that the AI boom is creating a widening gap between companies benefiting and those falling behind.

As more money flows into a handful of big tech companies, the market becomes increasingly dependent on them. Jones expects these companies to issue more debt and shares, potentially putting pressure on the market through 2027.
