Social Security’s next COLA could erode on arrival

Retirees are just weeks away from learning how much their Social Security checks will grow when the new benefit year begins in January 2027.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) will announce the 2027 cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) on Oct. 14, 2026, alongside the September consumer price report.

The Senior Citizens League projects the adjustment at 3.5%, while AARP’s latest forecast sits at 3.6%, both above the 2.8% increase from January 2026.

On the average retired-worker benefit of $2,085.98, a 3.5% raise would add roughly $73 each month, the SSA’s July 2026 data confirmed.

That $73 sounds like genuine relief for retirees who spent 2026 stretching a smaller adjustment across rising grocery and healthcare bills. But a projected increase in Medicare premiums is already set to reduce every monthly deposit before retirees see the full amount in January 2027.

The gap between the announced COLA and the money that lands in each retiree’s account has widened in every recent benefit year.

How Medicare Part B chips away at the 2027 raise

The 2026 Medicare Trustees Report projects the standard Part B premium at $209.50 for 2027, a $6.60 monthly increase from the current $202.90 rate.

That premium is deducted directly from Social Security checks, reducing each monthly deposit before it reaches the retiree’s bank account.

Indivar Dutta-Gupta, a distinguished visiting fellow at the National Academy of Social Insurance, told AARP that rising healthcare costs are outpacing COLA increases, leaving retirees to cover more of the difference themselves.

Older Americans are feeling inflation most acutely in groceries, energy, housing and health care, areas where those on fixed incomes have little room to adjust to and absorb costs.

The $6.60 monthly increase would absorb roughly 9% of a projected $73 COLA gain for the average beneficiary. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has finalized a 2027 Part D deductible of $700, an $85 increase from $615 this year.

Madison Partners, an advisory firm, estimated that the total 2027 Medicare increases could consume between one-fifth and one-third of a 3.5% COLA.

A decade of declining benefit value behind the 2027 adjustment

The upcoming raise comes amid a decade-long decline in purchasing power that no single annual COLA has been able to reverse. Benefits have lost 13.7% of their real value since 2016 and would need a 15.7% increase to recover that ground, the Senior Citizens League concluded.

The structural problem traces to the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, the inflation measure behind every COLA calculation.

Healthcare inflation is projected to run at 5.8% annually over the long term, while COLAs are projected to average 2.4%, HealthView Services reported.

The income thresholds that determine benefit taxation have held at $25,000 for single filers and $32,000 for joint filers since 1984, the SSA confirmed.

Congress has never adjusted those inflation trigger points, leaving a system that taxes more of retirement income with every passing year. Each annual COLA pushes more beneficiaries across those frozen lines, creating larger tax obligations on what was meant as an inflation adjustment.

The net effect is a second layer of erosion working alongside Medicare deductions to diminish the value of every benefit increase.

What retirees won’t learn from the Oct. 14 COLA announcement

The SSA’s announcement will confirm the gross raise, but the net amount retirees keep will depend on a CMS premium decision due in November 2026. Retirees will know the size of their 2027 increase for several weeks before they learn how much Medicare will deduct from each deposit.

Medicare Open Enrollment runs from Oct. 15, 2026, through Dec. 7, 2026, the window when 2027 Advantage and Part D plan pricing becomes available.

The federal enrollment portal lists Advantage and Part D drug plans side by side for the 2027 coverage year, the Medicare enrollment page confirmed.

The federal premium stabilization subsidy that helped contain Part D costs in recent years is being scaled back for 2027.

Individual drug plans could shift their pricing more sharply than program-wide averages suggest as the subsidy reduction takes hold across the market.

What the net raise means for your 2027 household budget

Roughly 44% of retirees rely on Social Security as their sole income source, the Senior Citizens League reported in its 2026 study.

For those households, every dollar deducted from the monthly benefit check reduces the amount available for groceries, utilities, and day-to-day living costs.

After the projected Part B deduction, a retiree collecting the average benefit would keep roughly $66 of the monthly COLA gain, an amount that shrinks further once individual Part D plan costs and any income-related Medicare surcharges are factored in.

Recovering all lost purchasing power since 2016 would require benefits to climb $295.85 each month, far beyond any single COLA cycle, the league found.

Medicare Advantage and Part D plan costs vary across providers, and the subsidy reduction in 2027 could widen those gaps for individual drug plans.

The actual amount each retiree takes home after the 2027 raise will depend on which Part D drug plan they choose and whether their income triggers higher Medicare premiums.

Filing status and total income also shape the final deposit, because the unchanged 1984 taxation thresholds pull more of each annual raise into taxable territory.
