In “Pink Clouding,” one of the four new tracks released as part of The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore on Sept. 25, the singer looks back on a past relationship, and her word choice is surprisingly psychological.In “Pink Clouding,” Swift describes a relationship where she overpromised, and ended up hurting her partner in the process (fans have theorized that the ex in question is Tom Hiddleston). While that experience might be a relatable one to listeners (no matter what end of the equation you’ve found yourself on), there are a few terms sprinkled throughout the song that might be less familiar — including the title itself. Here, a mental health expert unpacks the true meaning behind the lyrics.What Does “Pink Clouding” Mean, Anyway?With the term “pink clouding,” Swift put her own spin on a term commonly used by mental health professionals. According to Bonnie Lambert, PMHNP-BC, LPC, a board-certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner and licensed counselor, the phrase “clouds of pink” refers to the period during recovery where a person experiences extreme hopefulness, increased confidence, or elevated energy levels. “These feelings are beneficial and can help motivate individuals,” Lambert says. “However, these feelings may cause an individual to underestimate the continued effort required for their long-term success.”Newspix/Newspix/Getty ImagesIn the song, Swift sings, “I was pink clouding from the thrill of it / Skydiving as you wrapped your arms around my body.” Applying Lambert’s definition of the phrase, it sounds like Swift felt like she got ahead of herself, and entered this new relationship before she was fully healed from her past.“I would understand ‘pink clouding’ to be when you are totally caught up in an emotional high from a relationship or experience. In this emotional state, everything is better; things appear brighter and have greater promise,” Lambert says. But at the same time, Swift was so focused on her positive emotions, that she may have been missing important negative ones.What About “Gray Rocking?”Following her “pink clouding” line in the chorus, Swift utilizes another psychological term, singing “Gray rockin’ where the arrow hit / Years later, I still wonder how to tell you sorry.”According to Lambert, “gray rocking” is when someone delivers short and unemotional responses in order to avoid engaging with a person they’re trying to keep at a distance. “The primary purpose for using this technique is to prevent fueling further conflict or an unproductive relationship,” she explains.In “Pink Clouding,” however, Swift uses gray rocking in order to avoid addressing pain from her past, preventing her from being honest and communicative with her partner.
