JPMorgan eyes $2 trillion as Europe ETF demand builds

Europe’s exchange-traded fund market hit a record $3.97 trillion in assets by the end of August 2026, according to ETFGI’s August 2026 European ETFs report.

J.P. Morgan Asset Management is positioning for a commanding share of that business.

J.P. Morgan Asset Management manages approximately 42% of Europe’s active ETF market as at the end of the second quarter of 2026, Morningstar data reported.

The firm far surpasses its closest European rival in active ETF assets and plans to grow that business past $100 billion over five years as part of a broader push to double its total European assets under management to $2 trillion, Seeking Alpha reported.

That target enters a market where inflows have grown faster than most industry participants anticipated just 18 months ago.

Active ETFs in Europe gathered $34.82 billion in net inflows through the first eight months of 2026, up 64.2% from $21.21 billion over the same period a year earlier, the ETFGI report confirmed.

Travis Spence, Global Head of ETFs at J.P. Morgan Asset Management, outlined an ambitious growth timeline: He expects the European active ETF industry to swell to roughly $400 billion by 2030.

Ken Shaw, Head of ETF Solutions for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) at State Street, wrote in the firm’s 2026 Global ETF Outlook that active products are redefining fund distribution.

Active ETFs will be the defining product story of 2026. Although they currently represent only 3% of total European ETP assets, the momentum is growing,

J.P. Morgan Asset Management aims to command over a quarter of that $400 billion market, which would cement J.P. Morgan’s dominance in actively managed products.

Active ETFs now represent roughly 40% of all new fund launches globally, a sharp shift from about 3% three years ago, Spence noted.

The momentum extends beyond Europe, with active ETFs in the United States drawing $403.21 billion in net inflows during the first half of 2026, nearly doubling the $217.69 billion gathered over the same period a year earlier, ETFGI reported.

    Europe’s exchange-traded fund assets surged 24% to $2.2 trillion in 2024

Europe’s total ETF assets under management grew a notable 24% to reach $2.2 trillion in 2024, PwC’s ETFs 2029 report found. That expansion made Europe one of the fastest-growing major ETF markets outside the United States, surpassing growth rates across the broader asset management industry.

61% of European industry executives surveyed by PwC expect the region’s ETF assets to hit at least $4 trillion by June 2029. The projected compound annual growth rate of 15.5% far outpaces the 5.9% forecast for the global asset management industry as a whole.

Retail investors are driving much of that expansion, and the pool of individual buyers across European fund markets continues to widen. Nearly 74% of PwC’s European respondents predicted substantial growth in individual investors over the next two to three years, the PwC report found.

Digital platforms and ETF savings plans are attracting a generation of buyers who may never purchase a traditional mutual fund. Active strategies are gaining ground just as fast, with global active ETF assets under management climbing 52% to $1.03 trillion in 2024, PwC reported.

Major asset managers are converting mutual funds into ETF wrappers at record speed

The broader global migration from mutual funds into ETF wrappers is strengthening J.P. Morgan’s hand as the firm expands across Europe. A wrapper is the legal and trading structure around a fund, not the investments inside it.

When a mutual fund converts to an ETF wrapper, the same portfolio, manager, and strategy stay in place, but the fund moves onto an exchange where it trades throughout the day, typically at a lower expense ratio.

More than 200 such conversions were completed across the global fund industry through mid-2026, VettaFi’s ETF Database analysis found.

The first quarter of 2026 set a new inflow record, with over $500 billion flowing into exchange-traded funds across all global markets, the analysis confirmed.

JPMorgan has been converting its legacy fund products into the ETF wrappers at a steady pace throughout 2025 and into early 2026, VettaFi noted via ETF Trends.

Todd Rosenbluth, Head of Research at VettaFi, noted that JPMorgan’s fund conversion push has bolstered the firm’s standing as a leading active ETF provider. The manager’s commitment to be a leading provider is enhanced as they convert long-standing products into ETFs, he added.

Competition for the European active ETF market share is intensifying as both U.S. and European firms launch new products to challenge the incumbents.

Franklin Templeton, Goldman Sachs Asset Management, BNP Paribas, Ossiam ARK Invest, and Robeco all launched active ETFs in Europe over the past year, the Oman Observer reported.

How retirees holding legacy European funds can evaluate the active ETF shift

The structural migration from traditional mutual funds to ETF wrappers now affects retirees who still hold older fund products across European markets.

About 66% of industry participants surveyed by Janus Henderson view high-conviction active ETFs as potential substitutes for conventional mutual fund holdings, the Janus Henderson research indicated.

Spence has pointed to fixed income as the next major frontier for European active ETFs in an interview with the Oman Observer. He said bond ETF markets across the region have long lacked active strategies, but issuers are now launching products to fill that gap.

Roughly 53% of European survey respondents foresee significant near-term demand for active ETFs, which should intensify competition and push expense ratios lower, PwC’s report noted.
