Home Depot’s latest move is good for customers and the U.S. economy

Home Depot is one of those essential businesses American consumers can’t do without.

If you own a home, chances are, regular Home Depot runs are part of your routine. And while it’s not always fun having to spend money on home maintenance and repairs, it’s helpful to know that there’s a place you can turn for a wide selection of products.

Plus, some homeowners get to enjoy the fun side of Home Depot.

When you’re fixing a broken sink or toilet, a Home Depot trip is a chore. When you’re kicking off a home improvement project you’re excited about, it’s an outing to look forward to.

Now, Home Depot is making a move that could benefit both its customers and the broad U.S. economy. And it goes beyond the products shoppers find on store shelves.

Home Depot’s supplier strategy could benefit shoppers

Home Depot is expanding its efforts to connect with small business suppliers across the United States, giving entrepreneurs another opportunity to get their products in front of millions of potential customers.

The company shared on Oct. 14 that it will host its second Orange Exchange event on Feb. 18, 2027.

The program will connect small business suppliers with Home Depot merchants and company leaders through product demonstrations, pitch sessions, and opportunities for collaboration.

For shoppers, the initiative could mean access to more innovative products, greater variety, and potentially better value.

For the broader economy, it could help domestic businesses grow, create jobs, and keep more economic activity within the United States.

Through the Orange Exchange program, businesses will be evaluated on factors including product quality, market readiness, production capacity, and their ability to fulfill orders.

That last point is important. Getting a product onto a major retailer’s shelves is only part of the challenge for a small business. Producing enough inventory and delivering it consistently can be difficult without the resources and infrastructure of a large company.

Home Depot’s initiative could help bridge that gap, allowing smaller suppliers to compete for opportunities that might otherwise be difficult to secure.

“Partnering with innovative U.S. small businesses allows us to bring innovation and quality products to our customers while supporting entrepreneurship and growth,” said Candace Rodriguez, Home Depot’s senior director of sustainability and supplier pipeline.

Small businesses could give the U.S. economy a lift

Home Depot’s initiative also comes as consumers and retailers continue navigating economic uncertainty and higher operating costs.

“While consumer uncertainty and housing affordability continue to pressure demand for larger home improvement projects, we remain focused on what we can control – our strategy of driving our core and culture, delivering a frictionless interconnected experience, and winning the Pro,” CFO Richard McPhail said during the company’s second-quarter 2026 earnings call.

The company is therefore operating in an environment where delivering value matters. Its supplier initiative offers another way to pursue that goal while supporting businesses closer to home.

Small businesses that secure major retail partnerships may be able to increase production, hire workers, invest in equipment, and expand into new markets.

Those opportunities can create a ripple effect for local economies, benefiting employees and other businesses that support manufacturing and distribution.

Home Depot’s recent financial results also underscore the importance of maintaining competitive prices.

The retailer reported $47.9 billion in second-quarter sales, up 5.7% from a year earlier, while U.S. comparable sales increased 1.3%.

The company’s merchandising organization remained focused on being its “customers’ advocate for value,” Executive Vice President of Merchandising Billy Bastek said on the earnings call.

“This means continuing to provide a broad assortment of best-in-class products that are in-stock and available for our customers when they need it,” Bastek said.

Expanding its supplier network could support that objective by giving Home Depot additional choices as it builds its product assortment.

And if the company’s broad strategy delivers, shoppers and the U.S. economy could both come out ahead.
