Wingstop’s slump is getting worse, not better

Open the Wingstop app this fall, and you will likely see a game-day bundle, a Sour Patch Kids flavor, and a Club Wingstop pitch. Your deals may not match your neighbor’s, either.

The chain started using an AI engine in September to target offers to groups of guests, according to its earnings call transcript. The restaurant wants to target loyal customers with specific deals, especially as sales lag.

Wingstop Inc. (WING) said on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2026, that U.S. same-store sales fell 5.4% in the third quarter, according to its earnings release. It was the sixth straight quarterly decline, Nation’s Restaurant News reported.

The company also cut its full-year forecast again. It now expects U.S. same-store sales to fall 6.5% to 7% in 2026, down from a prior range of 4% to 6%, according to NRN. CEO Michael Skipworth told analysts that “the macro trends we are seeing among customers have intensified” in recent months.

It is the third cut this year, following reductions in April and July that NRN tracked. The 5.4% drop was smaller than the 7.5% decline NRN reported for the second quarter. But it came on top of a 5.6% slide a year earlier, according to the release.

Each Wingstop is bringing in less money

The clearest sign of strain is average unit volume, the yearly sales of a typical U.S. restaurant. That figure fell to about $1.85 million from about $2.06 million a year earlier, according to the release. A typical Wingstop now brings in roughly 10% less.

Total revenue still rose 5.3% to $185.1 million, according to the release, because Wingstop keeps adding stores. It opened 76 net new locations in the quarter and now has 3,331 worldwide.

That growth flatters headquarters more than the people running restaurants. Franchisees own about 98% of locations, according to the company, so they absorb most of the slowdown at each counter. To me, that split lets the corporate story look steady while the average restaurant weakens.

Gas prices are pinching Wingstop’s core customers

About 55% of Wingstop’s U.S. locations sit in urban, lower-income markets, and rising gas prices have hurt its sales in recent quarters, according to NRN.

Those prices have barely eased. Regular gasoline averaged $4.27 a gallon on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026, according to AAA, near record highs for autumn. A year earlier, AAA put the average at about $3.07. Those extra dollars at the pump come out of the same budget that pays for a wing night.

Consumer confidence bounced in October as gas prices eased from September, according to the Conference Board.

Even so, households planned to spend less on most services, a category that includes restaurants. Skipworth acknowledged that consumers are being more deliberate about where their money goes.

Wall Street cheered the quarter anyway

Investors focused on profit instead of traffic. Wingstop shares jumped about 15% at midday on the day of the report, CNBC reported. They closed up about 12%, according to StockAnalysis.

Adjusted earnings of $1.08 a share beat the $1.02 analysts polled by LSEG expected, though revenue missed, according to CNBC.

I’d read that rally as relief, not recovery. Baird analyst Christopher O’Cull noted on the call that the forecast implies fourth-quarter same-store sales down 4.5% to 6.5%. CFO Alex Kaleida said the range reflects current trends and confidence in the plan.

The 28 analysts tracked by StockAnalysis rate the stock a consensus Buy, with an average price target near $187. Citi and StoneX trimmed their targets after the report, according to the site. Even after the jump, shares trade at less than half their 52-week high of about $303, according to StockAnalysis.

Wingstop’s outlook rests on loyalty and sharper deals

For customers, the turnaround plan means more targeted deals. Skipworth admitted the chain’s ads leaned too much on awareness and too little on giving people a reason to choose Wingstop. Marketing now leans into game days and group orders, like a watch party bundle pitched at about $7 per person.

Club Wingstop, the chain’s first loyalty program, launched nationally in May. New members return within 30 days at a rate 13 points higher than nonmembers, Skipworth said.

Members past 90 days buy almost 20% more often, he added. If you eat there often, signing up likely unlocks the best offers.

Cheaper chicken gives Wingstop room to keep funding deals. Kaleida expects food costs next year to be at or slightly below this year’s level. Guggenheim analyst Gregory Francfort noted that rivals often offer cheaper solo meals or more sides, a gap Wingstop still needs to close.

Skipworth told analysts the plan is no quick fix. Digital sales already make up nearly 74% of Wingstop’s systemwide sales, according to the release. Fast-food value is increasingly fought in the app, where loyalty data decides who sees which deal.

Whether personalized value can outlast $4 gas will decide how long Wingstop’s slump runs.
