Holding the 9th overall pick in the 2026 MLB Draft, The Atlanta Braves had their highest slot since 2019. With the intention of contending for the foreseeable future they had only one chance to grab a truly premium talent in to add to the system, and even with top prospects falling in their lap they stuck to their guns and selected Virginia outfielder AJ Gracia. The general air around the Battery Power staff regarding Gracia is a wave of excitement, and it’s not an exaggeration to say this is the favorite pick of the staff in nearly the last 20 years. The Braves will get a discount on their slot value with the Gracia pick, but even ignoring that context there is every reason for fans to see him as a player who can be a cornerstone of continued excellence in Atlanta.

Why do we capital “L” Love this pick?

Gracia is one of the best pure hitters in this draft class, and with college hitting being the most premium tool in the draft that makes him a player which immediately garnered interest high in the draft. Gracia did everything well at the college level. He has an elite feel for the strike zone and an approach that can take advantage of his eye. That trait alone gives him a relatively high floor, but it’s ability to adjust his barrel and get his bat to the ball that stands out when watching him play. Gracia is difficult to beat, and nearly impossible to dominate. Gracia shows a rare ability to adjust his swing and find the barrel of the bat to any part of the strike zone, and despite a long-ish swing he doesn’t really have any trouble handling velocity. Gracia’s can tighten his swing when needed and always seems to be a step ahead of opposing pitchers, and when he gets a fastball in the zones he is looking for he attacks it with ferocity. It is rare for a plcayer without any molding from a major league organization to already have the mindset to let it rip against anything in his hot zone and the patience to wait until he gets a pitch in that spot. When you combine that with his ability to adjust his barrel he can hit pretty much anything and hit it hard.

“Two guys I love to watch are one, Cody Bellinger. Naturally with our body types, how we stand in the box, he’s got a lofty swing. I see a lot of myself in him and I think we have some similarities. I love watching Juan Soto hit. He’s just a really competitive guy, he never gives an at-bat away, great discipline at the plate, so I’d say those are two guys that I really like to watch. “

In his post-draft interview with media Gracia spoke of the players he models his game after. It’s easy to see the fingerprints of both at the plate. Gracia never gives up on an at-bat, and forces every pitcher he faces to execute at an elite level in order to get him out. Even when pitchers do execute he often spoils, and his reach and barrel control allows him to go a bit off of the plate and foul off tough pitches to keep at bats alive. Gracia doesn’t have the natural power to produce like Bellinger, but his swing is geared similarly, yet Gracia has better bat speed that allows him to perform better against velocity than Bellinger does. Putting him in category with superstars is absurd barring some major surprises in his batted ball profile once he reaches the professional level, but the building blocks of those players can be seen in the way he plays.

AJ Gracia comes off the board at 9!The three year college outfield has done nothing but produce, from Duke to Virginia. He is a corner outfield profile who I project can get into 30 HR power, and has the athleticism to give average defense. pic.twitter.com/kQQgUHZKQJ— Taylor Greenhut (@TGreenhutOD) July 11, 2026

Gracia’s ability against secondary pitches supports a player who should move quickly through the system and has the potential to be an elite on base threat. Gracia doesn’t chase breaking balls out of the strike zone very often, and he has the ability to hang on changeups and drive them the opposite way with force. Gracia doesn’t approach breaking balls and changeups with the same ferocity we see on fastballs, and he could be served well by attacking hangers to the pull side more often, but for a player with such a long swing he doesn’t pull off of slow pitches away from his body the way you might expect. He has the natural strength to flick changeups away and hit them out to the opposite field, and there may still be more room for him to grow into more strength. The Braves have done a terrific job in recent years of unlocking power from players who didn’t fully utilize their raw power at the amateur level, and Gracia is a guy who will consistently hit the ball hard regardless of what is thrown his way. Gracia doesn’t struggle to handle left-handed pitching and should be a guy that can play every day.

    Concerns

If Gracia was a perfect prospect he wouldn’t be available at the 9th pick. We often bemoan “high-floor” options as guys that lack the wow factor to change a lineup, and Gracia does have the chance of being a guy who just never produces enough power to hit in the middle of the lineup. He doesn’t produce the elite high-end exit velocities that are often seen at the top of the draft — this is the primary reason that he fell to this pick — and there isn’t much you could do with his swing to mitigate those limitations. Gracia’s swing is a bit stiff through his core and doesn’t create elite torque, and this may have him fall a bit short of what his frame might suggest. Fortunately Gracia’s game power does play a bit even over his natural pop due to his ability to hit the ball hard in the air on the pull side. His approach and swing should maximize that potential, but he isn’t likely to be a guy who comes in and shows 35+ home run pop. His biggest hole at the plate is his ability to hit the ball hard on the inner half of the plate, though that is not a particularly uncommon issue even for major league hitters. If he gets a fastball in his natural swing path he has the bat speed and the barrel control to pull the ball hard, but anything above or below that area has been a struggle for him at time. In particular he had trouble with right handed pitchers who could get sliders low and in on him, and it’s one of the reasons he performed better against left-handed pitchers than right-handed pitchers. Gracia has the ability to shorten his swing and make the adjustment to get to inside pitches, but it comes at the expense of power. He often just has to foul those pitches off or fight them out into the field for singles, and there isn’t a clear way to cover that hole without major swing changes. He can cheat fastballs in to get around on them, but that leaves him further vulnerable to those sliders down. It helps that he has a hot zone on the inner half that he hits hard. That makes the margins for a pitcher narrow, and if they don’t execute he can make them pay. Elite pitchers are going to exploit him sometimes, but he limits options to get him out and doesn’t miss when mistakes are made. He’s not an explosive athlete, though he is good enough to have a chance to stick in center field and has the bat to play a corner if needed.

    Immediate Reaction

This is a pick that has gotten huge acclaim from our group, and Gracia is a player who is built to succeed at the major league level. On base skill plays in any era, and Gracia is a guy that is going to make himself a threat in the near future. We could see him as a player who can get through the system as soon as 2028, and he is already likely to come in as our second-best position player behind Eric Hartman and in the top 3-4 overall in the system. Since the Jason Heyward pick in 2007 there is no one that stands out to us as a pick we like more. There are lofty expectations and Gracia has a long way to go in his career, but there are so few holes in his game and so much he could grow into that this pick waves a huge green flag around. This is the best prospect the Braves have drafted in the Alex Anthopoulos era and could reshape our view of the Braves future.
