House Speaker Mike Johnson’s wife, Kelly Johnson, runs a religious nonprofit that seeks to minister to young congressional staffers on Capitol Hill.
But as much as Kelly loves to brag about all of the “Lord’s work” she’s doing, she’s unsurprisingly pretty tight-lipped when it comes to fessing up about where the money for this nonprofit, and her own tidy little salary, is actually coming from.
Kelly, who is a faith-based licensed pastoral counselor — NOT a state-licensed mental health counselor or a Licensed Professional Counselor — founded her company, Onward Christian Counseling Services, LLC, in 2017. In 2019, the company launched its nonprofit arm, Onward Christian Education Services, Inc. When the nonprofit was first brought to fruition, Kelly and Mike Johnson claimed its mission was to counter the “cultural attacks” against traditional family values and Christian people as a whole. But after her husband took up the gavel in 2023, Kelly Johnson has focused her nonprofit efforts on Capitol Hill.
According to an IRS filing, the nonprofit’s new mission is to help “the hundreds of unreached young women” working on the Hill “find purpose, belonging, and Christian community.” She uses the nonprofit to offer free counseling to congressional staffers, give speeches, and lead “spiritual heritage tours” of the Capitol that focus on America’s evangelical Christian history.
