It is the newest federal holiday. Before its addition, Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday was the most recently created federal holiday, added in 1983.Juneteenth commemorates the event that informed people of the abolition of slavery, more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation during the Civil War. On June 19, 1865 — two months after the official end of the Civil War — U.S. Major- General Gordon Granger issued General Order No. 3, which notified the people of Texas that all enslaved people were free. The word Juneteenth is a combination of June and 19th, reflecting the commemoration of that date. The day is also known as Emancipation Day or Freedom Day. Juneteenth has been commemorated by Black communities in Texas since 1866, and Texas became the first state to make it an official holiday starting in 1980. All 50 states and the District of Columbia recognize Juneteenth as a holiday. A bill was first introduced into U.S. legislation in 1996, to recognize the end of slavery in the U.S., and other bills followed until the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act was passed in 2021.Related: An honest review of the Chase Freedom Unlimited® credit card
