Warren Buffett’s $142 billion fortune hits a new milestone

Warren Buffett no longer runs Berkshire Hathaway. He also no longer serves as its chairman.

Yet his personal wealth may still be moved by hundreds of millions of dollars in a single trading session by the firm he spent decades developing.

Buffett was forced back into an elite club as a result of that.

On Oct. 1, Forbes estimated Buffett’s net worth at about $142 billion, up nearly $500 million from the previous close and enough to make him the world’s 10th-richest person on its real-time billionaire ranking.

Buffett surpassed Amancio Ortega, the creator of Zara, whose wealth decreased by around $1.8 billion to $140.1 billion after Inditex shares declined 1.6%. Forbes reported that Inditex had dropped around 7.7% from the previous month.

The disparity serves as a reminder of how rapidly billionaire rankings may fluctuate when a significant portion of an individual’s fortune is linked to publicly listed businesses.

The achievement is particularly noteworthy for Buffett.

After leaving his position as CEO of Berkshire at the end of 2025, he became chairman emeritus in September, transferring the chairmanship to Howard Buffett while continuing to serve on the board, CNBC confirmed.

Buffett may have abandoned the titles, but the business that brought him fame is still intimately linked to his fortune.

Buffett moves back into the world’s top 10

It didn’t take a tremendous rebound for Buffett to return to Forbes’ top 10.

Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A) shares only edged higher on Oct. 1, but that modest move was enough to lift Buffett’s estimated fortune as Ortega moved in the opposite direction.

With a wealth close to $160 billion at the time, Forbes ranked former Microsoft CEO and Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer one position ahead of Buffett.

These rankings are not long-term rankings, but rather glimpses.

Billions of dollars might conceivably emerge or vanish from a billionaire’s estimated wealth without any shares ever changing hands, since Forbes adjusts the value of public holdings in response to changes in stock prices. During the trading day, their real-time rating updates public holdings.

Buffett’s ascent is especially appropriate in light of his success.

Most investors connect with the idea of disregarding short-term fluctuations in stock prices. However, they still have the potential to alter Buffett’s position on the world wealth leaderboard.

He has also donated significant portions of his fortune over the course of decades. According to Forbes, he has contributed more than $72 billion and promised to donate over 99% of his wealth in the future.

Even after such contributions, he is among the wealthiest people on the planet because of Berkshire, whose shares still drive Buffett’s net worth.

Even after giving up day-to-day management of the firm, Buffett may still move up or down the billionaire rankings based in large part on Berkshire’s stock performance.

As of the Forbes report, Berkshire Class A shares had risen more than 80% over the previous five years, although they were down slightly for the year. The company still has a valuation of over $1 trillion.

It is challenging to distill its scope into a single industry. In addition to owning a sizable portfolio of public shares, Berkshire owns companies in various industries, including manufacturing, energy, insurance, railroads, and consumer activities.

Even when Greg Abel took over as CEO from Buffett, that portfolio has kept changing.

In the second quarter, after a protracted period of selling, Berkshire became a net purchaser of equities for the first time. It bought $23.5 billion of equities while selling $3.7 billion, according to Reuters.

Berkshire also increased its Alphabet stake significantly, making the Google parent its third-largest publicly traded stock holding behind Apple and American Express.

Berkshire shareholders are interested in that action because the move away from Buffett has raised a question that Wall Street will probably pose for years: How much will Berkshire’s investing approach shift if Buffett doesn’t make all of the key choices?

Berkshire keeps making big moves after Buffett steps back

Berkshire has hardly become passive under its new leadership, according to one recent investment.

In late September, Berkshire continued to purchase Lennar (LEN) shares.

An SEC filing shows Berkshire-associated entities bought 660,410 Lennar Class A and Class B shares from Sept. 28 through Sept. 30, including more than 638,000 Class A shares on the final day at a weighted average price of $81.59.

With the acquisitions, Berkshire now owns around 26 million Class A shares and 553,000 Class B shares.

Berkshire’s recent acquisitions further complicate its increasing exposure to U.S. housing.

In addition to owning Clayton Homes, the corporation finished acquiring Taylor Morrison this year. The $8.5 billion Taylor Morrison merger was finalized in July after Berkshire announced it in May.

Buffett’s own billionaire status is simply one aspect of the tale, as the housing investment demonstrates.

Warren Buffett continues to serve as chairman emeritus, while Greg Abel has taken over as CEO and Howard Buffett as chairman of Berkshire.

The use of capital is ongoing. People are still purchasing stocks. Additionally, Berkshire is still big enough that even small changes in share prices may have a significant impact on the paper wealth of its most well-known shareholder.

    Buffett’s fortune tells a bigger stock-market story

Buffett’s return to the top 10 wealthiest individuals in the world is almost humorous, given the daily market fluctuations.

His approach to investing has always placed more emphasis on holding companies for their long-term economics than on worrying about where a stock is trading on a given afternoon.

Billionaire rankings do the opposite. They turn those daily fluctuations into a scoreboard. On Oct. 1, that scoreboard favored Buffett.

It just took a little increase in his wealth and a more severe drop in Ortega’s to flip their positions.

However, investors can value the rating’s backstory more than the actual ranking.

Buffett has now given up both of Berkshire’s most influential corporate designations, and the company continues to operate.

Under a new generation of executives, Berkshire has extended its exposure to Alphabet, according to Reuters. It has also accelerated stock acquisitions, ventured further into the housing market, and maintained its position as a trillion-dollar corporation.

The outcome is a unique kind of retirement for Buffett. Even if he is no longer the CEO in charge of every Berkshire decision, decades of ownership mean that those choices have the potential to make him hundreds of millions of dollars wealthier or worse on paper in a single day.

And on Oct. 1, that connection was enough to put Warren Buffett back among the world’s 10 richest people.
