Visa raises quarterly dividend by 16%

Think about the last time you swiped a card to pay for lunch. There’s a good chance Visa was part of that moment.

Valued at a market cap of $783 billion, Visa (V) is among the most recognizable brands globally.

In fiscal 2026 (ended in September), the fintech giant processed 281 billion transactions and reported record revenue.

As a result, during its fiscal fourth quarter and full-year earnings call, CFO Chris Suh said the board declared a 16% increase in the quarterly dividend.

    Key dividend metrics for Visa

    Dividend yield: 0.75%

Annual dividend per share (current): $3.12

Annual dividend per share (2008): $0.11

    Dividend growth (18-year CAGR): 20.4%

Annual dividend expense (current): $5.82 billion

Free cash flow (fiscal 2027e): $27.57 billion

    Payout ratio: Less than 25%

While Visa offers a dividend yield of 0.75%, the payment has risen by more than 20% annually for almost two decades.

With a payout ratio of less than 25%, Visa can easily increase the dividend consistently in line with free cash flow growth.

Visa’s record year set up the dividend raise

In fiscal 2026, Visa reported a record revenue of $46 billion, an increase of 15% year over year. CEO Ryan McInerney said it was the company’s strongest growth in more than 15 years, setting aside the pandemic rebound and acquisitions.

Comparatively, adjusted earnings per share rose by 16% to $13.27. In Q4, net sales rose 13% to $12.1 billion, while EPS rose 17% to $3.48.

“Our drivers for the year were strong,” McInerney stated. “Payments volume was up 9% year-over-year in constant dollars. Commercial payments volume grew 12% for the year in constant dollars, faster than consumer and the fastest annual growth rate in eight years.”

Suh said EPS beat expectations mainly because of a lower tax rate of 18.4%, which originated from tax benefits tied to recent legal settlements.

Then there are value-added services, the part of Visa that sells fraud protection, cybersecurity tools and consulting.

This segment grew revenue by 30% to $14 billion, an increase of around 100% over the last three years.

Visa dividend increase by the numbers

Here are the key dividend and shareholder return figures from the call:

Dividend increase: 16% on the quarterly payout, declared by the board.

Dividends paid in the fourth quarter: $1.3 billion.

Buybacks in the fourth quarter: $4 billion.

Buyback authorization left at the end of September: $24.4 billion

Stated plan: return excess free cash flow through buybacks

Visa paid $1.3 billion in dividends last quarter and spent $4 billion on buybacks. So, the dividend is the smaller piece of the shareholder return pie.

Suh was clear on the plan. The board raised the dividend, and Visa intends to return excess free cash flow through buybacks.

Shareholders who want income get a bigger quarterly check. Most of the cash, though, still goes out through share repurchases, as the fourth quarter showed.

A 16% dividend raise is faster than the low double-digit to low-teens EPS growth Visa expects in 2027.

Over time, a payout that grows faster than profit takes a bigger bite of earnings.

Risks that could trim Visa’s 2027 growth

Visa guided for net revenue growth in the low double digits in fiscal 2027. The second quarter should be the low point, and several moving parts sit behind that number:

Client deals: About 25% of Visa’s payments volume comes up for renewal, versus roughly 20% in 2026. Incentives paid to clients grew 21% in the fourth quarter.

Travel: The Middle East conflict adds uncertainty to cross-border travel spending in the CEMEA region.

Currency swings: Visa expects volatility to stay near fourth-quarter levels, which implies a drag for the full year.

Autonomous Research analyst Ken Suchoski asked Visa to explain “why there is not more EPS growth” given the revenue outlook. Suh answered that incentives are a tool to lock in long-term client relationships.

What the Visa dividend hike means for investors

Visa’s story right now is steady growth as newer bets, like AI agents that shop for users, are yet to gain meaningful traction.

Spending looks healthy, given that U.S. payments volume rose 10% through Oct. 21, and Suh said Visa saw no sign of weakness among lower-spending consumers.

For the first quarter, Visa expects net revenue growth in the low double digits and sees EPS growth at the low end of the mid teens.

For income investors, the raise adds to the bull case. For cautious ones, the renewal year, rising incentives, and the EPS gap are the pieces to watch.
