Trump pays the price for ditching the message that put him in power

President Donald Trump has lost favor with many of his core supporters, and the reason is pretty simple. According to Politico’s Alexander Burns, Trump failed to stick to the message that got him elected in the first place.

Drawing on Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s ability to withstand political challenges by staying focused on their core supporters, exploiting political divisions, and delivering messages that resonate with their voter bases, Burns argues that Trump has failed to employ the same strategies. Trump is losing ground at a critical moment, with the midterm elections fast approaching.

Former Trump supporters say Trump is not paying attention to the core issues. Burns points out that there is ongoing frustration with Trump’s scattered campaign strategy, which contrasts with the discipline Lula da Silva and Netanyahu exhibit that has kept them in solid political standing.

Trump’s message is not soothing Americans who are worried about the cost of living. Burns says that Trump has simultaneously alienated parts of his MAGA fan club over the war in Iran. Trump has relied on attacks against Democrats instead of focusing on the issues at hand, and his strategy is not landing.

Polls and early forecasts suggest Americans are increasingly eager for change, as Trump’s popular vote support declines. Burns notes that while voter dissatisfaction can create an opening for political challengers, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won reelection despite expectations that voters were ready for a change. Trump, however, may not be as fortunate as the midterms approach. Lula da Silva maintained his political advantage by consistently appealing to working-class voters, while Trump has struggled to deliver a similarly focused message.

Netanyahu, meanwhile, used fear-based messaging to bolster his support, portraying his opponents as weak on Iran and Arab political parties as an internal threat. According to the article, he also pushed for additional military strikes on Iran ahead of the election. Burns argues that by tapping into voters’ fears, politically vulnerable leaders can strengthen their support and maintain their hold on power.

Burns cautions that Trump’s political decline does not necessarily mark the end of his influence. By returning to the populist message that propelled him to power and rebuilding trust with his former supporters, Trump could regain his footing. He warns that Trump’s opponents should not view Trump’s current struggles as a permanent loss in a future election.
