Donald J. Trump couldn’t wait to pat himself on the back for his latest renovation of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Trump, unsurprisingly, declared the project a huge success during a speech on Monday. However, the victory lap was short-lived. Just hours after Trump finished congratulating himself, Washington Post reporters spotted fresh cracks and peeling in the newly applied coating, along with at least 20 areas of uneven coloring. So much for that beautiful new pool.
“We fixed the leaks, we resurfaced the bottom in a beautiful dark blue,” Trump insisted, adding that it had been finished in “the strongest coating you can get,” The Independent reports.
The Interior Department quickly defended Trump’s handiwork, with a spokesperson insisting the pool had never looked better. We’ve heard it all before. The official insisted the discoloration was due to excess coating and even suggested that the visible damage was related to vandalism — again. Even a fresh coat of paint can’t escape the Trump administration’s excuses.
“The Reflecting Pool has never looked this beautiful and it’s all thanks to President Donald J. Trump,” a spokesperson told the outlet. “He’s an expert builder who was able to repair the pool in ways Obama and Biden could never even dream of.”
