Katie Zacharia’s one-half Scaramucci tenure as White House press secretary was as bad as it was brief. But as much as she deserved the drubbing for her weird ineptitude and her inability to justify her unlicensed legal career, that should not distract from the fact that Donald Trump is the real culprit here.

“Zacharia’s hiring was solely a Trump decision, one furthered along with the strong input of his personal assistant Natalie Harp,” Axios reported Friday. “Zacharia flew out Thursday to Washington, slipped quietly into the White House without seeing any friends in the media or administration and had a good meeting with Trump. On Friday, Trump offered her the job on the spot.”

Even if this is questionable sniping arising from White House infighting, it seems likely Trump made a hasty decision based on Natalie’s input and his gut. We know no vetting was done because the ever-blundering Trump called Zacharia an “attorney” when he announced her appointment on social media. Even the Bungler-in-Chief would have known better had the vetting been done.
