Ray Dalio says one AI risk is hiding in plain sight

If you put $1 into a broad S&P 500 fund, roughly 26 cents can already ride on six companies closely tied to the artificial intelligence boom.

Ray Dalio believes that investors need to be aware of this. The billionaire Bridgewater founder said on Oct. 21 that investors should watch the bond market and AI concentration.

Dalio said the important question is not simply whether artificial intelligence is in a bubble, but how much of the economy and stock market have become dependent on the same trade.

“There is a lot stuck on one thing for the economy and the markets,” Dalio wrote.

His answer is simple: Diversify more and focus less.

Because many retirement accounts already hold Nvidia (NVDA), Microsoft (MSFT), Amazon (AMZN), Alphabet (GOOGL), Broadcom (AVGO), and Meta Platforms (META) via index funds, this is significant to regular investors.

You could have hundreds of stocks. Yet Dalio cautions that they may not accurately reflect hundreds of distinct wagers.

Ray Dalio says AI concentration is the risk to watch

Dalio’s Oct. 21 message was unusually direct: “Pay attention to the concentration that is existing in one thing right now: AI.”

He did not make the case that AI businesses would fail. Instead, Dalio examined what happens when investors’ money, corporate spending, and economic growth are tied to the same outcome.

“Whether or not you think AI is in a bubble, you have to recognize the amount of concentration risk,” Dalio wrote.

Nvidia may continue to expand. AI has the potential to generate huge profits for Microsoft. Spending on data centers might result in years of extra earnings for Alphabet, Amazon, and Meta.

However, holding all of those businesses may not always provide the diversity an investor believes if they are all progressively motivated by the same AI expenditure cycle.

“Because all of that is risky, I want to have less concentration on one thing and more diversification right now,” Dalio wrote.

Your retirement fund may already depend heavily on AI

The numbers make Dalio’s warning easier to understand.

As of Oct. 29, Nvidia represented 7.77% of State Street’s SPYM S&P 500 fund.

Broadcom accounted for 2.47%, Meta for 2.07%, Microsoft for 5.91%, Amazon for 3.59%, and Alphabet’s two share classes for an additional 4.52%.

These six AI-related businesses together accounted for almost 26% of the fund.

AI is not the exclusive focus. S&P Dow Jones Indices says the 10 largest S&P 500 constituents accounted for 37.3% of the entire index as of Sept. 30.

Still, without making a conscious choice to place large bets on Nvidia or AI, a worker who automatically contributes to an S&P 500 retirement fund may face greater concentration.

Dalio sees another risk building behind AI stocks

The concentration of the stock market is not the end of Dalio’s worries.

He said in an analysis published on Oct. 13 that massive government borrowing and rapidly expanding corporate finance requirements are beginning to vie for the same capital pool.

The rivalry is becoming fiercer due to AI. According to Dalio, the amount of AI hyperscaler bonds issued in the first half of 2026 was more than $220 billion, which is more than twice as much as the approximately $108 billion issued in all of 2025.

Dalio also said corporate bond issuance has risen sharply as companies finance AI capital spending, and excessive borrowing may ultimately raise financing costs.

In addition to increasing business borrowing costs and hurting technology values, higher rates may pressure other sectors of the economy.

Retirement investors therefore have two reasons to be mindful of their exposure.

The first is clear: Broad stock indices are increasingly influenced by a small number of AI companies.

The second is less obvious: Funding the AI boom may have an impact on interest rates and bond and stock prices well beyond Silicon Valley.

None of this implies that investors should give up on S&P 500 funds or Nvidia. Dalio’s argument simply highlights the importance of understanding the true risks present in a portfolio.
