One software leader keeps hiring even as it loses investor favor

Guidewire Software (GWRE) just reported a strong final quarter.

The company beat both earnings and revenue expectations, and is still hiring steadily.

Yet on Friday, Sept. 4, 2026, its stock dropped about 20% in a single session, closing near $162.42.

That contrast is worth noticing. The company is hiring like business is strong, but investors sold off like something is wrong.

This gap could be a sign that Wall Street is not on the same page as the company about how soon it can deliver the growth that investors want.

What Guidewire does and how it earns its money

Guidewire builds the software that property and casualty (P&C) insurers use to run daily operations, including writing policies, sending documents, and settling claims.

Insurers pay recurring fees to use cloud platforms like InsuranceSuite.

InsuranceSuite runs on annual recurring revenue (ARR), which is the yearly value of those long-term contracts.

Guidewire holds a commanding position here.

Nine of the top 10 global insurers use its platform, and it now has $858 billion in active insurance policies, Investing.com reported.

Why GWRE stock fell despite a strong quarter

    The results themselves were solid.

Guidewire confirmed its fourth-quarter revenue rose 15% to $411 million, and adjusted earnings of $0.99 per share beat expectations.

The problem was in the forecast.

Guidewire guided fiscal 2027 ending ARR to a range of $1.45 billion to $1.46 billion, which points to about 18% growth, down from 19% in fiscal 2026.

First-quarter revenue guidance of $372 million to $378 million also came in below the roughly $395 million Wall Street had modeled, ChartMill reported.

    Here’s the catch.

GWRE trades at a rich valuation, with a price-to-earnings ratio near 99. When a stock is priced that highly, even a small slowdown in the growth outlook forces the market to lower its valuation.

The stock had also climbed about 20% in the month before the report, which raised the bar for what the guidance needed to deliver.

Why the company keeps hiring while the stock sells off

Here is the part that pushes against the sell-off.

Guidewire has kept expanding its workforce, reaching roughly 4,066 employees, according to Revelio Labs.

Building and deploying cloud systems for large insurers requires people, so steady hiring points to real demand for migrations and deployments.

The recent quarter backs that up.

Insurer Nationwide, a Fortune 100 company, agreed to move all of its Guidewire software over to the cloud version.

MAPFRE US and AF Group also expanded their use of the platform.

Chief Financial Officer Jeff Cooper said more than half of the new ARR in the outlook is already under contract, with signed agreements and confirmed rollout dates.

What GWRE investors should watch next

For anyone considering the stock, a few signals are worth watching:

Whether ARR growth holds near 18% rather than slipping further

Whether the larger workforce turns onboarding backlogs into faster ARR

Whether Guidewire keeps customer losses low as attrition returns to normal after an unusually strong year

    There are real risks here.

Large insurance migrations move slowly and involve many moving parts. Legacy license revenue keeps shrinking as customers move to the cloud.

On top of that, the stock’s premium valuation leaves little room for error if execution slips.

The business is working well and its management is still investing in growth, but the market wanted faster near-term numbers than the fiscal 2027 outlook offered.

Patient investors are betting the hiring push and signed backlog convert into stronger ARR.

Investors watching the next few quarters will want to see growth stabilize before the stock regains its premium valuation.
