Novo Nordisk CEO resets expectations for Wegovy’s explosive growth

I believe that when a stock is down nearly 10% year to date and down 38% over three years, the CEO’s job on a quarterly earnings call is not just to report results. It is to rebuild a narrative that investors have lost confidence in.And Novo Nordisk CEO Mike Doustdar is honestly trying that with one specific data point. The 102-year-old Danish pharmaceutical giant reported Q2 2026 results on Aug. 4 and raised its full-year guidance. But the number that mattered most was not in the financials. It was in the prescription trajectory of the Wegovy pill. The first million prescriptions took 11 weeks, with no competitor in the market. The most recent million prescriptions took four weeks, with a competitor actively fighting for market share.”We have not allowed that,” Doustdar told CNBC’s Carolin Roth.Currently, Novo Nordisk (NVO) is down 9.87% year to date, according to Yahoo Finance. Also Read: Novo Nordisk Latest News and StoriesWhat the Novo Nordisk Wegovy data actually revealFive million total prescriptions have been written for the Wegovy pill since its U.S. launch, according to an Aug. 4 CNBC interview. Weekly prescriptions exceeded 265,000 for the week ending July 17, according to the company’s Q2 earnings release. The acceleration narrative is the argument Novo Nordisk is making to investors who have been skeptical about GLP-1 adoption. Prescription velocity is increasing, not slowing, as the product matures in the market and faces competition.More Novo Nordisk:Novo Nordisk shares in hot water after disappointing trialOzempic maker takes biggest rival to court over weight-loss drug adsNovo and Lilly shift GLP-1 strategy abroad: US may be nextHere is something vital. The user demographics add another dimension that the quarterly print does not fully capture. Approximately 80% of patients starting the Wegovy pill have never taken a GLP-1 treatment before, according to Doustdar in the CNBC interview. This is predominantly new-patient volume, not cannibalization of existing Wegovy injectable users. The cannibalization occurring — the 20% who switch — is coming primarily from competitors’ products, rather than from Novo’s own franchise. That profile is strategically important. If the pill is capturing GLP-1 naive patients, it is expanding the total addressable market rather than redistributing it internally.Novo Nordisk Q2 2026 financial results: adjusted vs. reported growthNovo Nordisk’s Q2 results require some careful reading. Why? Because of a significant prior-year comparison distortion, according to the company’s Aug. 4 earnings release.Q2 2026 reported sales increased by just 3% at constant exchange rates (CER), negatively impacted by a DKK 2.6 billion rebate provision reversal related to the U.S. 340B Drug Pricing Program, which had boosted Q2 2025 results.Adjusted sales grew 7% at CER, driven by GLP-1 volume growth across geographies and favorable U.S. rebate adjustments.Adjusted operating profit grew 11% at CER. Reported operating profit declined 16% at CER, impacted by non-cash impairment charges of DKK 6.3 billion related to intangible pipeline assets, including DKK 4.0 billion tied to the monlunabant program. Its guidance raise is the headline you should also note. Novo raised its full-year 2026 guidance for adjusted sales growth and adjusted operating profit growth. The improved outlook is driven by increased expectations for GLP-1 product sales, with Wegovy pill adoption in the U.S. and international market expansion as the primary drivers.

International expansion and the pipeline behind the domestic storyBeyond the U.S. numbers, Novo is building a global Wegovy pill rollout that gives the prescription trajectory a multi-year tailwind. The company launched the Wegovy pill in the UAE in June, achieving 50% market share within three weeks, despite entering as the second competitor, according to Doustdar’s interview and the Q2 earnings report. The U.K. reached 300,000 active patients. Meanwhile, the European Medicines Agency approved the Wegovy pill in July based on the OASIS 4 trial, which demonstrated up to 16.6% weight loss mean. Related: Goldman Sachs doubles down on Novo stock target after key eventGermany is among the first European markets planned for the drug’s rollout.Separately, the Wegovy 7.2 mg single-dose pen, which provides up to 20.7% mean weight loss based on STEP UP trial data, received EMA approval in July and launched in the U.S. in April. That higher-dose formulation extends the product ladder within the Wegovy franchise. One pipeline setback in Q2 is that the ZEUS Phase 3 trial with ziltivekimab in cardiovascular disease did not meet its primary endpoint, Cardiology Advisor reported. That result contributed to the DKK 4 billion impairment charge in Q2.What Doustdar’s confidence means for NVO, which has delivered years of gainsHere’s my read of the CEO’s CNBC performance: The pill is accelerating in a competitive market, the majority of users are new to GLP-1 therapy, and the guidance raise reflects genuine operational momentum rather than financial engineering. The stock trading 38% down over three years shows that the market’s skepticism has been deep. The question heading into the second half of 2026 is whether the prescription acceleration Doustdar described sustains into Q3, European launches begin contributing meaningful revenue, and the 80% new-patient capture rate holds.”Raising guidance is why I’m bullish,” Doustdar said on CNBC. “It’s about making a promise to your stakeholders and over-delivering.” The prescription data he cited on Aug. 4 is his evidence that the promise is tracking. Related: Wall Street sees huge upside as Novo Nordisk backs biotech company
