Pastor Lorenzo Sewell doesn’t just claim to have the right but the God-given duty to pick and appoint U.S. government officials.
“Preachers were always meant to pick the politicians, to anoint the politicians, and to appoint the politicians,” Sewell bizarrely claimed.
“As a matter of fact, if you look at the history of our church or the history of America, we know that in the beginning of our emphases, we didn’t let, we didn’t allow people to run for office.” Sewell continued. “The church picked people. That’s what happened.”
Um, no. I don’t know who picked officials before the American Revolution but I know for sure that churches did not pick politicians once we became our own country. That’s because the U.S. Constitution very definitely says otherwise.
Article 1, Section 2 of the Constitution states that the House of Representatives are “chosen every second Year by the People.” Section 3 originally stated that senators were to be chosen by their states’ legislatures. The 17th Amendment provided for them to be elected also.
If that isn’t clear enough for Sewell, he should become familiar with the First Amendment. It states, right at the start, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion.”
