Jeff Bezos has simple advice for retirees watching the AI market

Jeff Bezos built one of the world’s biggest fortunes by betting early on new technology, so people listen when he talks about AI. Speaking on Fox News about the AI boom, the Amazon founder called it an industrial bubble while acknowledging that it is very hard to know how it will play out. The exchange turned into a quick lesson in how to think about a market that keeps climbing on one big story.

He has been down this road before. Almost exactly a year earlier, Bezos called the AI boom a kind of industrial bubble and said investors struggle to separate good ideas from bad ones amid the excitement. This time, though, the most useful part of his answer was aimed at people living off their savings.

Bezos sees a bubble that still builds something

In the interview with Bret Baier, which aired on October 7, Bezos argued that a bubble can still be good for society even when investors lose money. Speculators can get burned, he said, but the inventions do not disappear when the bubble pops. He also said AI could make people productive enough that some may choose to work fewer days, and that some two-earner households may decide one income is enough.

The hard part is timing. Bezos said these periods fund every experiment, the good and the bad, and that it is tough for investors to tell them apart while the frenzy is still playing out. He called that tricky for investors but good for society. That is the core problem with calling a top in real time.

He made a similar case in October 2025 at Italian Tech Week in Turin. There, he described AI as an industrial bubble but said the technology is real and will change every industry. In his view, the frenzy can still leave something positive behind once it fades, as reported by Fortune.

Bezos pointed to the biotech boom of the 1990s as a guide. Investors lost money back then, but the world still got a couple of lifesaving drugs out of it. AI, he suggested, could end up following a similar path.

Why the bubble call is so hard to make

The stock market shows how much is already riding on AI. As of late May, the 10 largest U.S. stocks made up a record 41% of the S&P 500’s market value, 14 percentage points above the dot-com peak in 2000, and nearly half of every dollar in the index went to AI-linked companies, according to Yahoo Finance.

The spending is just as striking. Alphabet put about $51.4 billion into capital projects in its latest quarter and expects to spend between $195 billion and $205 billion for the full year. Its free cash flow was negative for the quarter.

Amazon is moving even faster. The company expects about $220 billion in cash capital expenditure this year, and CEO Andy Jassy said it will spend meaningfully more in 2027. Jassy also said Amazon could have two trillion-dollar revenue businesses within five to 10 years.

That spending is already eating into cash. Amazon’s free cash flow over the past 12 months has swung from an inflow to an outflow. The gap between what companies spend today and what AI earns them later is exactly why nobody can say for sure where the boom stands. For now, investors are being asked to take part of the payoff in faith.

Bezos points retirees to the whole market

Then came the practical question, and Bezos did not tell retirees to shun AI altogether. Baier asked whether Bezos would tell a retiree to own AI stocks today, and Bezos said he would usually tell a retiree to buy the S&P 500. Baier’s reply was short: “Play it safe,” according to Fox News.

Buying the index does not mean skipping AI. Roughly 35 cents of every S&P 500 dollar sits in the Magnificent Seven. A retiree who owns the index already owns the biggest AI names, just without betting the house on any one of them.

Picking winners is hard even for professionals. About nine in 10 actively managed large-cap funds trailed the S&P 500 over the 15 years through June 30, and the share was even higher over 20 years, as reported by TheStreet.

The index is not perfect for everyone, though. Investors should build an emergency fund first, and an S&P 500 fund holds no foreign companies, which leads some people to add an international fund. Those are fair points for anyone who needs cash close at hand.

Buffett has made the same case for years

Bezos is in very good company. In his 2013 letter to Berkshire Hathaway shareholders, Warren Buffett said the cash he leaves his wife should go 10% into short-term government bonds and 90% into a very low-cost S&P 500 index fund. Short-term government bonds are also easier to tap than longer-dated ones, which can matter for someone drawing on savings.

He has repeated the message many times since then. In his 2016 letter, Buffett said a low-cost S&P 500 index fund had been his regular recommendation, and at the 2021 Berkshire meeting he said buying one was the best thing for most people, according to TheStreet.

Buffett even put money behind the idea, betting $1 million in 2007 that an S&P 500 index fund would beat a group of hedge funds over 10 years. The Vanguard fund returned about 7.1% a year, compared with 2.2% for the hedge funds. For retirees caught up in the AI debate, two of the most famous names in business are pointing to the same simple path.
