    Iconic supermarket chain closes more stores and facilities

    Popular supermarket chains, such as Giant Food, are implementing restructurings and closing store locations and facilities that are underperforming hoping to improve profits.89-year-old supermarket chain Giant Food will close its store in Nottingham, Md., on Aug. 6 after shuttering its e-commerce fulfillment center in Manassas, Va.Store executives said the decision to close was made after “the normal course of evaluating business and local trade areas,” according to WMAR-TV2.

    Giant Food closes Maryland location”We determined that we can adequately serve this community through several nearby Giant Food locations, as well as our online services, Giant Pickup and delivery. While closing this location, we remain committed to meeting our customers’ needs and providing the best service,” Giant Food said in a statement.Employees at the Nottingham location, which opened in 1976, are being offered the opportunity to transfer to other Giant locations, the company said, adding that they are committed to helping employees through the transition.Prescriptions filled at the Nottingham store will be transferred to a Giant store closest to a customer’s listed address. Prescriptions can be transferred to the Giant pharmacy of a customer’s choice, according to WBAL NewsRadio.Giant Food was not immediately available for comment.Ahold Delhaize shuts fulfillment centerGiant Food parent Ahold Delhaize also closed the supermarket chain’s e-commerce fulfillment center in Manassas earlier this year after considering customer trends and preferences for home delivery where customers are increasingly expecting fast delivery, more assortment, and delivery availability to meet their preferences, the company said in a statement.Giant Food last year closed a store location at the Shoppes at Ryan Park in Ashburn, Va., on Jan. 30, 2025, according to The Burn.A notice on the door read: “This Store and Pharmacy will be closing permanently Jan. 30 at 6 p.m. Please visit our other locations in Ashburn, 43330 Junction Plaza or 44110 Ashburn Village Blvd.”Company closed stores in 2024 and 2025The company used the identical statement in 2025 as it did in July 2026 to explain the reason for closing the Ashburn store.Giant Food closed a location at Edmondson Village at 4624 Edmondson Ave. in Baltimore on June 13, 2024, according to WJZ-TV.The company is directing customers to visit its newly remodeled location at 4622 Wilkens Ave.Directing customers to remodeled store”We believe the expansion and enhanced amenities at our newly remodeled Wilkens Avenue store offers a fantastic replacement for our Edmondson Avenue location,” Giant Food President Ira Kress said in a statement.Giant Food, which opened in December 1936, operates 165 locations in Maryland, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Delaware.Ahold Delhaize has been busy closing stores in its other grocery store brands as well.Stop & Shop also shuttered locationsThe supermarket operator’s Stop & Shop chain closed store locations in Basking Ridge and Westfield, N.J., as part of a turnaround strategy launched in 2024 to improve profitability, which resulted in the closure of 32 stores.Other supermarket chains are also closing underperforming stores to improve profits.Grocery store giant Kroger revealed in its first quarter of 2025 earnings call on June 20, 2025, that it would close about 60 stores across its portfolio by the end of 2026.Lakeland, Fla.-based supermarket chain Publix, which operates 1,440 stores in the Southeast, has closed several locations this year.
