GOP mayor restrained after lunging at attendee during chaotic town hall

A Republican mayor lunged at his own constituents — and it is unclear what if anything the police will do about it.

“A seemingly routine Pemberton Township council meeting Wednesday night came to a dramatic close after Mayor Matthew Bianchini charged at someone in the audience,” the Philadelphia Inquirer reported on Thursday. “The incident, captured on video by the township’s meeting livestream, came almost exactly an hour into the monthly gathering that was attended by dozens of people.”

The newspaper added, “As Kenneth Gerber, a recently fired township official, and his attorney were at the podium during public comment, the video captures Bianchini, sitting behind the dais, turn his focus from the lectern to the audience. There’s some back-and-forth between Bianchini and the audience that was not clearly picked up on the video, before one attendee can be seen raising his middle finger toward the mayor.”

The New Jersey Republican then “leapt from his chair and approached the attendee as Gerber and a few other people held him back and council members called for him to stop. He was physically removed from the room as he yelled ‘I’m going to get you’ at the attendee, who in turn called for the mayor to be arrested.” The attendee reportedly said that he had been threatened.

The Garden State GOP, once associated with genteel and centrist Republicanism, has since become known for its colorful character. Earlier in 2026, Rep. Tom Kean Jr. went missing for an extended period of time. Despite being up for reelection, Kean’s office did little to officially confirm that he is alive and able to survive for weeks

.“Kean enters reelection in what could be his most challenging congressional bid to date,” Politico reported in April. “He faces an environment that is increasingly challenging for Republicans and the Trump administration is opening an immigration detention facility in his district while pulling funding for a major infrastructure project for New Jersey commuters — both of which have put him in a precarious position.”

More broadly, the New Jersey electorate among Republicans has started to more closely resemble the MAGA universe.

“Trump lost New Jersey, but just barely, and he did so well that some Republicans hope New Jersey has tiptoed into swing-state territory,” the New Jersey Monitor wrote in 2024 about the 2025 gubernatorial election. “That has driven most of those hoping to win June’s GOP primary to fight over “who’s most MAGA,” with the lone exception being Sen. Jon Bramnick, an anti-Trump moderate, said Jeanette Hoffman, a Republican strategist.”

The Monitor added, ““We already know what message they’re relying on, and it’s Trump. It’s a MAGA message,” Hoffman said. “There was a huge enthusiasm in the Republican base for President Trump in November.””
