Family member reveals ‘pathological’ reason for Trump’s garbled speech

On Monday, a family member of President Donald Trump revealed what prompted a garbled statement he made during a recent rally. According to the president’s niece, psychologist Mary L. Trump, her uncle stammered out some nonsense rather than admit he’d misspoken due to his “pathological” insecurity.

She was referring to something he said during a rally in Oklahoma last Thursday. President Trump was telling a story about the bombing of Iranian nuclear facilities in June 2025, when he said, “And then at 1 o’clock in the morning with no moon, dark as can be, these unbelievable machines led by the most incredible pilots in the world, they unloaded; every single bomb went right down air chutes into this, uh, drug factories, really. That’s what they were doing – they were nuclear and drug. They were doing drugs, but they were doing the nuclear. But these drug factories-slash-nuclear factories were hit so hard.”

As CNN reports, Trump’s claim “bewildered not only average Americans but also experts on Iran’s nuclear program.” James Acton, co-director of the Nuclear Policy Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, told CNN. “Wow… That one is new to me. To my knowledge, the Fordow facility, whose destruction Trump is describing, was not being used for drug production and neither had I previously heard any allegation (credible or otherwise) that it was.” In CNN’s assessment, “It appears likely that he made a simple mistake, and then – as he has for years – doubled down instead of correcting himself. For a president who has declared himself ‘right about everything,’ even an admission of minor verbal error is usually a bridge too far.”

Mary Trump arrived at a similar conclusion, asserting that because Trump is so “pathologically insecure,” he can “never, ever admit making a mistake, no matter how tiny and insignificant.” According to CNN, Trump likely forgot what he was talking about. “Just before he started talking about Iran,” the outlet explains, “he had been talking about his attempts to thwart illegal drug trafficking in the Caribbean and about the US military operation that captured then-Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. Trump’s initial remark about bombs hitting Iranian ‘uh, drug factories, really’ seemed likely to be a slip triggered by the preceding remarks about illegal drugs and Venezuela. Trump has long refused to acknowledge even insignificant speaking stumbles, instead preferring to act as if he had really meant to say the mistaken thing he said – even something as insignificant as whether a federal agent he praised in a 2018 address is nicknamed ‘CJ’ or ‘DJ.’ Here, instead of just amending the ‘drug factories’ assertion, he ad-libbed three additional lines reiterating the assertion.”

His niece has noted such instances before, asserting after an incident in June that her uncle “is simply a profoundly insecure man who cannot keep his own stories straight.” The president and his loyalists, she argued at the time, “desperately want to be feared. They want to project strength, inevitability, and power. Strip away the propaganda, however, and what remains is something considerably less impressive. There is only absurdity. And absurdity deserves exactly what we continue to give it. Not reverence. Not intimidation. Ridicule.”
