Costco quietly made a big pricing change

If there’s one thing Costco is known for, it’s remarkably low prices.

In fact, a big reason impulse purchases are so common at Costco is that members tend to stumble upon new deals and think, “Hey, that’s just too good to pass up.”

Now, Costco shoppers have another reason to check the price tags on some of the warehouse club’s most popular products.

The retailer recently quietly lowered prices on several Kirkland Signature items during its latest quarter, continuing a strategy that has become increasingly important as consumers contend with stubborn inflation.

Costco members get a good surprise

During Costco’s fourth-quarter 2026 earnings call, CFO Gary Millerchip said the company’s goal is to be “the first to lower prices where we see opportunities to do so.” He then offered several examples of products that Costco had already followed through on.

    During the quarter:

Kirkland Signature walnuts fell from $13.79 to $9.99, a savings of $3.

Kirkland Signature Colombian whole-bean coffee dropped from $21.99 to $19.99.

Kirkland Signature dry facial towels were reduced from $19.99 to $18.99.

Kirkland Signature coarse black pepper fell from $6.99 to $5.99.

Those reductions may look modest individually. But they fit into a broader Costco strategy.

Costco likes to return savings to members whenever it can, rather than simply allowing lower costs to expand its margins.

That strategy is particularly notable because inflation remains a problem for American consumers.

The latest Consumer Price Index showed that overall consumer prices increased 3.4% over the 12 months ending in August. Food prices increased 2.7%, while food purchased for consumption at home rose 2.2%.

At the same time, some costs are rising much faster. The energy index jumped 16.3% over the year, while gasoline prices were up 27.4%.

That environment makes Costco’s pricing strategy more meaningful.

Shoppers may be more willing to pay the annual membership fee if they believe the warehouse club can consistently deliver lower prices on products they buy regularly.

And Costco’s latest results suggest that approach is working. The company ended 2026 with 84.1 million paid members, up 3.8% from the prior year, while membership fee income increased 7.3% to $1.849 billion.

Costco is cutting prices while costs remain uneven

The latest price reductions also highlight the advantage of Costco’s limited-SKU, high-volume model.

Rather than carrying an enormous selection of competing products like most grocery chains do, Costco can concentrate its purchasing power on a relatively narrow group of items. That can give the company opportunities to negotiate better costs and pass some of those savings along to members.

Millerchip said inflation during the quarter remained in the low single digits overall, although Costco saw higher inflation in some non-food categories, particularly because of memory costs in consumer electronics, gas, and petroleum-based products.

That makes the decision to lower prices on select products notable.

Costco isn’t claiming that everything is getting cheaper, nor is it making a big show of price reductions. Instead, it appears to be taking advantage of specific opportunities to reduce prices when possible.

And with inflation still pushing household budgets higher, even a few dollars saved on coffee, walnuts, household products, or spices can help reinforce why it makes sense to continue paying for a Costco membership.
