(42-43) Gwinnett Stripers @ (37-49) Durham Bulls – POSTPONED
(35-41) Columbus Clingstones 4, (46-35) Knoxville Smokies 5
Patrick Clohisy, CF: 1-for-3, R, 2 BB, 3 SB, .260/.340/.436
Jordan Groshans, 3B: 0-for-4, R, RBI, .274./.353/.553
Brett Sears, SP: 6IP 7H 4ER 1BB 7K, 4.17 ERA
Box Score
After going ahead early, the Clingstones were unable to make a one run lead last – unfortunately due to some timely hitting by the Smokies in the games middle innings.
Brett Sears got the start for the Clingstones and provided six solid innings, striking out seven across six innings of work. The first run given up by Brett Sears came in the first as he gave up a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning. Brett would settle in, retiring the next seven batters straight before the stretch ended with a one out double in the bottom of the fourth inning, immediately followed up by a run scoring single, and double, before ending the threat. Sears would run into more issues in the following inning, loading the bases before allowing a two run single that tipped the game into the Smokies favor at 4-3. Ian Mejia (1.1IP 2H 1ER 0BB 1K) would come in for Brett in the seventh and work around a hit by pitch to retire the side. Ian would then allow an additional run to score in the eighth inning, after he allowed back-to-back doubles before Tyler LaPorte (0.2IP 0H 0R 0BB 1K) would come in to end the threat and record the final two outs.
Offensively, the Clingstones struggled to collect hits when they counted the most – going 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position, stranding seven on base. The Clingstones scored the first run of the game after Patrick Clohisy started the game with a five pitch walk before stealing second and third base. With one out, Jordan Groshans reached base via a fielding error – scoring Clohisy.

Jordan would come around to score later in the inning on a wild pitch to give the Clingstones an early 2-0 lead. They would tack on another run in the fourth inning when Dalton McIntyre drove in Ambioris Tavarez on a force out. Fast forward to the seventh inning, with the Clingstones now trailing 4-3, and they would tie the score on a Luke Waddell ground out that drove Dalton McIntyre to make it 4-4. Unfortunately, the Clingstones were unable to find the equalizer after the Smokies went up in the eighth, falling 4-5.
(40-38) Rome Emperors 2, (28-51) Jersey Shore BlueClaws 0
Dallas Macias, RF: 1-for-4, HR, 2 RBI, R, .154/.143/.615
Eric Hartman, CF: 0-for-2, 2 BB, .290/.365/.556
Owen Carey, LF: 1-for-3, BB, .266/.336/.468
Mason Guerra, 1B: 1-for-4, R, .242/.352/.426
Cam Caminiti, SP: 6IP 3H 0R 2BB 3K, 4.08 ERA
The Emperors pitching staff were dominant as they held the BlueClaws to 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position while doing just enough offensively to secure the win.
Cam Caminiti got the start for the Emperors and provided what was likely his best start of the season as he delivered six shut out innings. Every time Caminiti faced pressure, he was able to generate weak contact or pick up a high leverage strikeout to end any sort of threat. It was promising to see as Cam didn’t generate the SAM he normally does with his fastball but instead located the four-seam where it needed to be to get ground outs. While it’s been an up-and-down season for him, in terms of overall results, it’s been a strong season for Cam Caminiti who seems to have turned a corner – as he’s allowed just five earned runs over his last five starts. During that stretch, opponents are hitting a meager .148/.281/.235 – with the slugging percentage solely inflated by a pair of triples surrendered. Cam was removed after 87 pitches, the most he’s thrown since May 21st, and replaced by Tyler Schoff (1IP 0H 0R 1BB 2K) who worked a scoreless seventh inning. Mathieu Curtis (1IP 0H 0R 0BB 0K) worked a scoreless eighth inning, needing just five pitches to record the three outs. He was then relieved by Jarret Whorff (1IP 0H 0R 3BB 1K) who made things interesting, loading the bases on back-to-back-to-back walks before ending striking out the final batter of the game, picking up his first save and ending the game.
Offensively, there isn’t much to cover as the Emperors were mainly held in check by a quartet of Jersey Shore pitchers. The Emperors collected a total of four hits, three extra-base hits, in the win. The team went a paltry 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position but were the victors thanks to Dallas Macias collecting his second homer since his promotion, and eighth on the season in the second inning. The Emperors would threaten, of course, but were unable to get across another run. The top 3 of the lineup – Tate Southisene, John Gil, and Eric Hartman went 0-for-8 but did walk a combined four times.
(32-48) Salem RidgeYaks 1, (45-36) Augusta GreenJackets 4
Alex Lodise, SS: 1-for-4, R, .255/.339/.472
Tanner Smith, C: 2-for-4, R, RBI, .251/.314/.491
Junior Garcia, RF: 2-for-2, BB, 3B, R, RBI, .216/.348/.321
Matt Scannell, LF: 1-for-1, 2 RBI, BB, R, .200/.556/.800
AJ Smith-Shawver, SP: 4IP 2H 0R 0BB 5K, 1.29 ERA
Box Score
The recipe for success for the GreenJackets was dominant pitching and clutch hitting as they picked up their 45th win of the season in what has been a strong first half of the season.
AJ Smith-Shawver was dominant in his rehab start – as his velocity consistently sat 96-99 and he was able to blow it by batters. By establishing it at the top of the zone, everything else played up including his strong splitter that he consistently delivered at the bottom of the zone. AJ got his pitch count up to 46 in those four innings, so it’s important to maintain patience as he slowly works back from injury. That said, it was a great glimpse into his arm talent, something the big league team can sorely use after he’s ready. Following AJ was Kade Woods (2IP 0H 0R 2BB 2K) who would work around a pair of walks in a much needed extended, scoreless appearance. Following Kade was Luis Sifontes (3IP 1H 1ER 1BB 6K), who surrendered the only run of the game allowed by the GreenJackets in the eighth inning, but also struck out six while picking up his second save of the season – pitching the final three innings.
The GreenJackets offense was mainly held in check outside of a pair of innings, the games third and fourth. In the third it was Junior Garcia who led off the inning with a triple. He was brought in two batters laters when the recently signed Matt Scannell picked up his first home run in a GreenJackets uniform.

The GreenJackets would tack on another two runs in the fourth inning – highlighted by an RBI single by Tanner Smith, and RBI single by Junior Garcia. For the game, the GreenJackets collected just even hits while striking out 12 times and going 3-for-12 with runners in scoring position. Thankfully that’s all it took as the GreenJackets stay within two games of first place in the second half of the season.
