Apple is quietly preparing a major change inside its stores

This fall, Apple shoppers entering one of the company’s stores may notice something unusual before they see a new iPhone.

Apple is reportedly making big adjustments to parts of its retail shops to make space for forthcoming home items, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

The tech giant is likely to upgrade the HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K, but the magnitude of changes to the store has led to speculation that a significantly more important device could debut alongside them.

The product is Apple’s long-rumored smart-home hub, a display built to control linked gadgets, host FaceTime chats, show widgets, and bring a more competent version of Siri into the home.

“The scale of the retail changes suggests something else is coming,” Gurman wrote, according to 9to5Mac, referring to Apple’s long-anticipated home hub.

There is nothing formal yet. Apple has not unveiled the gadget or specified a debut date, and the corporation could yet split the launches. But recent references to software and reporting increasingly suggest a wider home-hardware push, rather than periodic updates to two aging items.

That is relevant for Apple (AAPL) investors, since the company has long tried to produce services and accessories as a broader part of its ecosystem, MacRumors noted.

For customers, that might imply Apple is finally getting ready to provide a more direct competitor to the smart displays and home-control gadgets that Amazon and Google already sell.

Apple’s next home device could be more than another HomePod

The leaked home hub will have an approximately 7-inch square display, with at least two configurations, one with a speaker-style base and one meant to be mounted on a wall, 9to5Mac and MacRumors said.

Reports claim the device might run a new operating system focused on the home, display widgets, offer FaceTime support, and function as a hub to handle smart lights, locks, cameras, and other devices. It’s also rumored to feature an A18-class CPU and pack Apple’s latest Siri AI capabilities.

This would make the device strategically distinct from the current HomePod mini.

Apple’s existing small HomePod already works as a smart-home hub, but it lacks a display and costs $129 in the U.S. right now, according to Apple’s website. The full-sized HomePod is $349.

The latest Apple TV 4K, meanwhile, starts at $199 for the 64GB Wi-Fi model and runs to $249 for the 128GB Wi-Fi-plus-Ethernet version.

That means Apple has some of the pieces for a linked home ecosystem already. It’s just never had a dedicated screen to bind them together.

It’s especially notable because the existing HomePod mini is rather old by Apple standards. The latest iteration dates back to 2020, while the latest Apple TV 4K design dates back to 2022.

Both are set for CPU updates, which are designed in part to accommodate Apple’s latest Siri features, according to recent reports.

    Apple’s rumored home lineup

New HomePod mini: Expected to receive a newer processor, with reports pointing to an S9-series chip or better.

New Apple TV 4K: Rumored to gain an A17 Pro-class chip or newer hardware and potentially an updated Siri Remote.

Smart-home hub: Reportedly a roughly 7-inch display available with either a speaker base or wall mount.

Siri AI: Expected to play a central role across the new products.

Timing: Reporting points toward fall 2026, 9to5Mac noted, though Apple has not confirmed launch dates.

MacRumors says that code in a macOS 26.7 release candidate points to unannounced home devices, including two types of home hubs and a new HomePod mini.

Software references don’t guarantee a product will launch, but they are another indication that Apple has hardware under active development.

Apple’s home push could put Amazon and Google on notice

The greater story for the average family is not that Apple is rearranging a few shelves. It’s whether the business can make the smart home a whole lot easier to operate.

For years, the market has been promising consumers a house where lighting, cameras, thermostats, and entertainment systems all operate together. In reality, many households still have to deal with various apps, conflicting standards, and voice assistants that don’t always understand what consumers want.

A dedicated Apple home hub might make that experience easier for individuals already using iPhones, Apple Watches, AirPods, and other Apple gadgets.

That’s where the competitive ramifications get more fascinating.

Amazon has spent years pushing Echo screens and Alexa further into homes, while Google has its Nest displays and smart ecosystem. Apple has mostly gone to market using the Home app, HomePod, and Apple TV rather than providing a standalone touchscreen command center.

A new hub might fill the gap.

There is also a financial reason why Apple might care more about the home now.

A smart-home hub doesn’t need to be an iPhone-sized enterprise to be useful. It might also make other Apple gadgets and services more valuable by giving users another reason to stay in the ecosystem.

A household with an Apple hub may be more likely to buy compatible peripherals, subscribe to Apple services, play Apple Music throughout the house, make FaceTime calls from another room, or buy Apple’s home products as old gear needs replacing.

That’s the same ecosystem concept Apple has successfully employed elsewhere. The individual product is important, but the relationships across items might be even more important.

AAPL investors have a bigger question than gadget sales

The possible home hub comes at a key time for Apple.

Every credible effort to develop another product category is worth following. The company remains tremendously dependent on the iPhone.

Chances are you won’t see a home hub with the kind of iPhone revenue anytime soon, but it may bolster Apple’s position in a sector where Amazon and Google have years of user experience.

The device might also provide Apple with a more prominent stage on which to illustrate the advantages of its enhanced Siri.

That’s important because voice assistants were meant to be the operating system of the smart home years ago, but often the experience fell short. Generative AI presents another possibility for firms to make such assistants truly useful, rather than just able to set timers and play music.

If Apple can combine a more proficient Siri with a screen, cameras, FaceTime, and home controls, the company may make the smart-home argument more palatable to an ordinary buyer.

    But the price will count.

Apple has hiked the price of the HomePod mini to $129 and the Apple TV 4K to $199, its U.S. shop now shows. That leaves an important question of where a more sophisticated smart display might fit.

Consumers may find it difficult to justify buying a product that costs too much, like an iPad. But a cheaper price point might make it an accessible entry point into Apple’s larger ecosystem.

That may be why the reported retail-store changes are worth watching. Apple does not typically reorganize valuable store space for a product it expects customers to ignore.

The company has not confirmed what is coming, and the rumored hub could still slip beyond the fall.

But if the reports are right, Apple’s next meaningful hardware battle may not happen in your pocket. It may happen on your kitchen counter or living-room wall.
