When an airline faces a challenging financial outlook or an unpredictable situation, the solution is sometimes to stop service temporarily to avoid running up debt and resume when the conditions are more optimal.
Since the spring of 2026, Maldives-based BeOnd has not been running flights due to both the high cost of jet fuel and security situation in its main Dubai base as it hopes to restart operations by October.
Japanese regional carrier Toki Air also suspended service for two weeks during the country’s peak travel period last July but eventually resumed its routes connecting the northern Niigata prefecture with the rest of the country.
The latest carrier to shut down operations for two weeks is South American budget airline Paranair.
Paranair shuts down flights for two weeks, offers refunds
Launched out of the Paraguayan capital of Asunción at Silvio Pettirossi International Airport (ASU) in 2015, Paranair evolved into the country’s main budget airline and flies to 12 destinations across Paraguay and to nearby countries like Uruguay, Brazil and Argentina.
The suspension of all service between Sept. 30 and Oct. 12 comes as the airline’s only Bombardier CRJ-200 regional jet is brought in for scheduled repairs and maintenance.

In a statement, Paranair said that any passengers who bought tickets for that time period will be contacted by an airline representative with rebooking and refund options.
Airlines that filed for bankruptcy in 2026:
Spirit Airlines: The largest airline shutdown of the year occurred when Spirit Airlines canceled all remaining flights on May 2. Although the airline had filed for Chapter 11 protection twice before, the skyrocketing price of jet fuel dealt the final blow.
Magnicharters: The Mexican low-cost airline canceled all flights and eventually filed for bankruptcy protection in May 2026 amid mounting financial pressures.
Starflite Aviation: The Houston-based carrier had its AOC license revoked in March 2026, amid FAA claims that owners falsified pilot training records to bypass safety audits.
AlpAvia: The Slovenian charter airline shut down in March 2026 due to a string of financial problems.
“Starting October 13, we will resume regular operations on the routes currently included in our operational network,” the airline said in a statement posted to several social media channels in translation from Spanish.

How to get a refund for a canceled Paranair flight
While the airline presents the maintenance and subsequent shutdown as routine, the sudden cancelations sowed chaos on travel agencies in multiple neighboring countries that booked their customers to travel to Paraguay in the coming weeks.
Carlos Pera, president of the Uruguayan Association of Travel Agencies (Audavi), told local newspaper El Observador that the sudden suspension of a route between Asunción and Montevideo caused “great concern and unease” especially given the large number of business travelers between the two countries.

Paranair further added that “travel agencies have received the relevant information to relay to their clients and handle the affected cases” while encouraging travelers to “verify their booking status directly through our official channels or with their travel agency.”
