However, there’s one watch brand from a country you might not immediately associate with luxury timepieces that’s been making waves for years. The brand is Sea-Gull and the country is China. Not only does this company make beautiful luxury watches at an affordable price, but it has a real watchmaking legacy that goes back over 100 years and traces its roots to Switzerland. The result of this is a Chinese luxury watchmaker that can give you a high-end watch look and feel for a tiny fraction of the cost of shopping for its European counterparts. What’s more, almost all of its watches are available at Amazon. The history of Sea-Gull watchesIn 1924, the Venus watch company opened its movement factory in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, to create watch movements for its own watches as well as other watch brands. Venus movements were widely respected for their quality and accuracy for decades. Luxury watch brands such as Breitling and Heuer (now TAG Heuer) used Venus movements to power their watches. That’s because Venus was a highly specialized movement producer, and it knew how to design and manufacture chronograph movements that could consistently perform at the highest levels. You may be asking yourself why we’re discussing a century-old Swiss watchmaker in an article about modern-day Chinese watches. Fast forward to 1961. The Chinese government opened the Tianjin Watch Factory to build a high-quality, reliable aviation chronograph for its country’s air force. Because it didn’t have any previous watchmaking experience or equipment, the factory came up with a brilliant plan. By this time, Venus had manufactured many legendary movements, including the Venus 175 chronograph. Unfortunately, the industry had begun to move toward more in-house movement making, and Venus’ bottom line was suffering. This predicament allowed the Chinese government to swoop in and purchase the blueprints, patents, and perhaps most importantly, the heavy manufacturing machinery from the financially struggling Venus. Production of the beloved Venus 175 chronograph movement was essentially teleported from La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, to Tianjin, China overnight. Chinese engineers then adapted the Venus 175 movement to actually improve on Venus’ original design. The upgraded movement had more jewels, a higher beat rate, and more durability than the original Swiss creation. Eventually, the Tianjin factory was re-named Sea-Gull, and the modified Venus 175 movement was dubbed the Sea-Gull ST19. It was subsequently placed in the standard issue aviator’s chronograph for the Chinese Air Force.Sea-Gull 1963 Mechanical Chronograph

The watch has a see-through caseback that allows the wearer to admire the craftsmanship every time they take it off. Additionally, the brand has also created a modernized automatic version of the watch. While the original 1963 is a hand-wound model with an impressive chronograph movement, some people may prefer a more hands-off approach to their timepiece. For these people, the automatic version of the watch may be a better option. Sea-Gull 1963 Automatic

Below are a few of the more unconventional watches that are sure to get you attention from watch collectors and novices alike. These watches incorporate very high-end complications and design elements but still maintain Sea-Gull’s affordable pricing strategy, despite the watch’s luxurious pedigree.Sea-Gull GMT World Time Watch
