Accenture spent years building in China; now it may cash out

In November 2004, Accenture opened an office in Guangzhou and called it a sign of its “deep commitment to China,” ZDNET reported. By then, the firm had already operated on the mainland for over a decade.

More than two decades later, that commitment has a price tag. Accenture plc (ACN) has hired JPMorgan Chase & Co. to explore selling its Greater China business. The Financial Times reported the review on Sunday, Oct. 18.

A deal could value the unit, which spans mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, at up to $1.5 billion. Unsolicited buyer interest over the past year prompted the review, the FT said. Accenture may retain a significant minority stake to give clients continuity, and no deal is guaranteed.

Investors shrugged. Accenture shares rose about 1.4% in midday trading on Monday, Oct. 19, 2026.

The price tag is too small to be the point

A $1.5 billion sale barely registers for a company this size. Accenture’s market value sits near $138 billion, StockAnalysis data show. The China unit would equal roughly 1% of that.

The money matters less than the message. Accenture plans to return at least $9.5 billion to shareholders in fiscal 2027, The Next Web noted. The FT said China proceeds could help fund it. Even so, a sale would cover only about a sixth.

CFO Angie Park previewed the logic at Accenture’s investor day on Oct. 14. She said the company keeps exiting “countries, contracts, that no longer meet our strategic or return thresholds,” Benzinga reported.

She did not name China, and she did not have to.

China’s rules have already split the business

Accenture’s model depends on moving work and data across borders. China makes that harder every year.

Tighter security rules limit how much sensitive data can leave China, the FT noted. Several Western advisers, McKinsey among them, have already scaled back.

That leaves Accenture China running more like a local firm than a global branch. A sale with a retained stake would simply match ownership to that reality.

Washington adds pressure from the other side. McKinsey barred its China practice from generative AI work in 2025 amid U.S. scrutiny, Bloomberg reported.

Accenture has more to protect there than most. Every G7 government is an Accenture client, CEO Julie Sweet told investors at the same event, according to a StockAnalysis transcript.

A China consulting arm gets harder to defend when Washington sits on that client list.

Wall Street’s average target now trails the stock

Accenture is a dividend payer as much as a tech services bellwether. Its payout yields about 2.9%, according to StockAnalysis, so any shift in its cash plans matters to income investors.

Shares have traded between $118.15 and $291.09 over the past 52 weeks, StockAnalysis data show. The stock now sits about 20% below that high.

The stock still looks cheap by its own standards. It trades at about 16 times forward earnings, according to StockAnalysis forecast data. The multiple was nearly 28 times at the end of fiscal 2024.

That discount reflects lingering doubt about Accenture’s core argument. The company is still trying to convince investors that AI will bring it more work, not less, The Next Web noted.

Analysts are not chasing the rally, either. StockAnalysis tracks 27 analysts, and their consensus rating is Buy. Their average price target of $225.32 sits below where the stock now trades.

Hold ratings have climbed to 16 from 10 in May, the same data show. The latest calls all landed on Oct. 15:

Buy rating, $260 target: Goldman Sachs, James Schneider

Buy rating, $240 target: RBC Capital, David Paige

Hold rating, $235 target: BMO Capital, Keith Bachman

Hold rating, target raised to $201 from $193: TD Cowen, Bryan Bergin

Hold rating, $195 target: Morgan Stanley, James Faucette

For shareholders, the real gain from a China sale would be less risk, not more cash. A retained stake would preserve some upside without the full regulatory exposure.

Minority stakes are becoming the China playbook

Accenture would not be the first Western brand to trade control for a minority stake in China. Starbucks agreed in November 2025 to sell 60% of its China retail arm to Boyu Capital, Al Jazeera reported. McDonald’s Corp. sold a majority of its China business in 2017, the same report noted.

What changes now is the industry. Coffee chains and burger restaurants sell products. Consultancies sell trust and access to sensitive data, the two things Beijing and Washington now police hardest.

If Accenture follows through, the test is whether a locally controlled unit keeps its multinational clients. A clean handoff could become the template for other Western advisers weighing their China exposure. Park’s threshold may not stop at one country.
