Bomani and Wally reflect on hearing ATLiens for the first time, the massive impact of “Elevators (Me & You),” and OutKast’s dramatic evolution from Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik. They explain how the album introduced a darker, more introspective sound while establishing André 3000 as one of rap’s most innovative voices and proving why Big Boi remains one of hip-hop’s most underrated MCs.
The conversation also explores OutKast producing much of the album themselves, Organized Noize’s influence, the memorable contributions from the Dungeon Family, and how songs like “Babylon,” “Mainstream,” “Decatur Psalm” and “E.T. (Extraterrestrial)” helped point toward the creative breakthrough that would become Aquemini. Plus, Bomani delivers his Babyface hot take, compares Big Boi to Emmitt Smith and explains why he might have ended ATLiens one track earlier.
