    4 Standing Exercises That Build a 6-Pack Without a Single Sit-Up After 70

[[{“value”:”A six-pack after 70 feels out of reach for one reason, most of us were raised on sit-ups. The six-pack is real muscle, the rectus abdominis, obliques and deep core, and it still responds at 70. I’ve coached many adults over 70 and I’ve noticed that clients who firm up their midsection after 70 stopped curling and started lifting on their feet. These moves build that muscle. Whether it shows depends on the eating habits that trim belly fat as you age, not ab work alone.
The sit-up curls the spine forward rep after rep, and bone-health guidance for older adults favors a neutral spine over repeated curling. The sit-up also starts on the floor. Getting up off the floor after 70 is a hard trip down and back up, a skill of its own.
Stand up with a dumbbell in one hand or racked on one shoulder, and your abs and obliques have to keep the trunk from twisting, leaning or arching. With the neutral spine, you can add weight week by week. Over time, that steady loading builds stronger six-pack muscles without a single curl.
The four exercises below follow that plan. The first three move from easiest to hardest, then a finisher at the wall works the deep abs. You need one light dumbbell, a sturdy chair, a counter within reach and a clear stretch of wall. Start light, move slowly, keep your ribs down and brace before each rep. End the set when your torso starts to lean or twist.

    Dumbbell Around-the-Body Pass

Every pass around the body shifts the load from one side of your body to the other, and your obliques and deep abs have to stop the sway each time. I give this exercise to clients over 70 who need steady trunk work without bending. Your arms move while your trunk stays put.
Stand with your feet hip-width apart and a counter within reach. Hold a light dumbbell in front of your waist and pass it hand to hand around your body at a steady pace. Keep it close, with your hips and shoulders square and your ribs down. Only the dumbbell gets to sway. To make it harder, use a heavier dumbbell for the same circles, then bring your feet closer together to shrink your base.
    How to Do It

    Stand hip-width beside a counter
Hold a light dumbbell at your waist
Pass it hand to hand around you
    Keep hips and shoulders square
    Move slowly with ribs down
Do 2–3 sets of 5–8 circles each direction.

    Counter Plank Shoulder Taps

Every tap takes one hand off the counter, and your abs and obliques have to keep your hips from rocking toward the open side. The six-pack muscles hold the whole plank while the support keeps changing under you.
Place your hands on a sturdy counter, shoulder-width apart, and walk your feet back until your body forms one straight line. Start with your feet hip-width apart and brace with your ribs down. Lift one hand, tap the opposite shoulder and set it back down, then switch. Your hips stay level while your hands take turns. To make it harder, walk your feet farther back, then pause for a two-count on each tap, then bring your feet closer together.
    How to Do It

Put your hands on a sturdy counter
Walk your feet back into a line
    Brace with your ribs down
Tap the opposite shoulder, then switch
Keep your hips level and still
Do 2–3 sets of 8–10 taps per side.

    Offset Dumbbell Box Squat

This squat is here for the lean, not the legs. With a dumbbell on one shoulder, your body wants to tip toward it. The opposite obliques keep you level. I like this move because the chair sets the depth while the offset weight trains your abs.
Rack one dumbbell at your shoulder with the elbow tucked. Stand in front of a sturdy chair at normal height against a wall. Lower until your hips brush the seat, then stand back up. The key involves keeping both shoulders level. Switch shoulders each set. Stay level as the weight tugs sideways. To make it harder, use a heavier dumbbell on the same chair, then move to a lower seat once your shoulders stay level.
    How to Do It

Rack a dumbbell at one shoulder
Back up to a chair against a wall
Lower until your hips brush the seat
    Keep both shoulders level
Stand without leaning toward the weight
Do 2–3 sets of 6–8 per side.

    Standing Wall Dead Bug

This final movement ties the set together. The first three keep you moving. This one holds still and asks the deep abs to keep your back flat. As your hand and knee press together, your low back wants to peel off the wall. I save it for last because a flat back makes the deep abs fight the arch.
Stand with your back on a wall, feet a step out, knees soft. Press your low back to the wall with your ribs tucked down. Lift one knee to hip height and press the opposite hand into it, with the knee pushing back. Rest your free hand on your stomach. Breathe through 10-second holds, and stop if your low back arches off the wall. To make it harder, stretch each hold toward 20 seconds, then hold a light dumbbell at your chest with your free hand.
    How to Do It

Press your low back to a wall
Lift one knee to hip height
Push the opposite hand into it
Stop if your low back arches
Do 3–4 holds of 10–20 seconds per side.
