4 Seated Ankle Exercises That Stop Tripping Faster Than New Shoes After 65

[[{“value”:”Tripping after 65 begins with something tiny. As your leg swings through a step, the front of your foot lifts a split second too late, and your toe catches a rug edge or a misplaced cable. The gap between toe and floor is called toe clearance, and with age it gets less consistent from step to step. In a year-long study, trips and slips caused 59% of falls among independent adults aged 60–88. New shoes feel like the obvious fix, and the right pair does matter. But a shoe works from the outside in. We need to train the muscle that lifts your toes on every single step.
The tibialis anterior pulls the toes up as your leg swings forward, the calf helps with the push-off, and the muscles along the outside of the lower leg catch a foot that lands crooked. The four exercises below load these muscles. You’ll need a sturdy chair, one or two light dumbbells, and a resistance band. Place the chair against a wall so it can’t slide, and stop if anything hurts or you feel dizzy. Keep a controlled tempo and lower every rep slowly. Train these ankle movements consistently, and the muscles behind every step will get stronger over time.

    Seated Dumbbell Toe Raise

Let’s first build the tibialis anterior, the muscle that helps you lift that toe so you clear dangerous tripping hazards. I start clients here because sitting allows you to put a real weight on that forefoot. Rest a light dumbbell across the top of your forefoot and keep your heels planted.
Start very light, the shin is a small muscle that tires quickly. Lift your toes as high as they can go, then pause. Lower slowly, because the controlled return builds strength too. Keep your knees still so the ankle does all the work.
    How to Do It

Sit tall near the chair’s edge
Rest a dumbbell across your forefoot
Plant your heels on the floor
Lift your toes toward your shin
    Lower slowly over 3 seconds
    Repeat for 10–15 reps.

    Seated Dumbbell Calf Raise

A bent knee calf raise shifts the work to the soleus, the deep calf muscle underneath. I use this seated version: you can load the calf without worrying about balance.
Set a dumbbell on each knee and keep your feet flat. Press through the balls of your feet and raise your heels as high as you can. Keep the dumbbells steady and your toes on the floor. Hold the top for a second, then lower on a slow count of three. That slow descent is important in building the calf muscle’s strength.
    How to Do It

    Sit tall with feet flat
    Rest dumbbells on your knees
Press through the balls of your feet
Lift heels as high as possible
    Lower slowly over 3 seconds
    Repeat for 12–15 reps.

    Seated Banded Ankle Eversion

Eversion means turning the sole outward. It’s the job of the muscles on the outside of your ankle. If you can properly move the sole outward, you reduce ankle injury. I add this move because a misplaced step onto a curb edge can become a rolled ankle in a heartbeat.
Loop a light resistance band around both feet and sit with your heels on the floor. Start with a band that lets you finish every rep smoothly. Turn the soles outward against the band while your heels stay planted. Keep your knees still so the motion comes from the ankle alone. Return slowly and keep tension on the band.
    How to Do It

    Sit tall with feet together
Loop a band around both feet
Keep heels planted on the floor
Turn soles outward against the band
    Return slowly with control
    Repeat for 12–15 reps.

    Seated Fast Toe Tap

This final movement trains the same toe lift as the first exercise, with one key difference. The dumbbell toe raise builds strength under load; this one trains speed. Your foot has only a split second to clear a rug edge. If you lift your toe too slowly, you can still catch it on a rogue edge. So it’s good to perform speed work, because a strong muscle still has to fire fast to perform in the real-world.
Sit near the front of the chair with both feet flat and heels down. Skip the weight here, added weight lift slows down the movement. Lift your toes as fast as you can, then lower with control. Alternate feet in quick bursts and keep the rhythm crisp. End the set when the lifts start to slow. That kind of speed comes from the muscle, not the shoe.
    How to Do It

Sit tall with heels on the floor
    Lift one forefoot quickly
    Lower it with control
Alternate feet at a fast pace
    Tap for 20–30 seconds
    Rest and repeat 3 times.
