That there is always a compulsion underneath, always a pull, and the work is managing it. Is it a daily struggle for you too? He did not give the answer I expected.
“I am no longer an addict. I’m not an addict anymore. I am in recovery, but I’ll always be vulnerable to anything that is a mind-altering substance.” Then he laid it out. He can never again take anything that lifts his mood, changes how he behaves, quiets his anxiety, unless a doctor knows about it. Not once. Not ever. He said it with no drama, the way you’d describe managing any other disease.
