[[{“value”:”Today, most chain-restaurant and fast-food burgers are cooked on a flat-top griddle. However, once upon a time, the flame-grill method, aka charbroiling, was the norm. Cooking burgers over an open flame gives them a smoky, charred flavor that tastes similar to a backyard BBQ burger. Why did many restaurants opt to switch to a flat-top grill? They not only let you cook more burgers at once, but they also retain moisture and are easier to clean. If you prefer the old-school method, a handful of chains still charbroil burgers. Here are 4 burger chains that still flame-grill over an open flame, according to diners.

    Burger King

Burger King is famous for its “flame-grilled” or “flame-broiled” burgers, using an industrial broiler with real flames and a conveyor system to cook 100% beef patties. This creates its signature char and smoky taste, a process they’ve used since the 1950s to provide a charred, “charbroiled” flavor. “A good whooper is ,” a Redditor exclaims.

    The Habit Burger Grill

The Habit Burger & Grill, which specializes in chargrilling its burgers, cooking patties over an open flame for a signature seared taste, was recently ranked second among all burger chains by Yelp. The signature Charburger, “layered with caramelized onions, lettuce, tomato, pickles, and mayo on a toasted bun,” is a diner favorite. It “has built a loyal fanbase with its smoky, flavorful patties, chargrilled to perfection over an open flame, and a commitment to fresh ingredients,” Yelp writes.

    Cook Out

CookOut’s backyard-style “Char-Grilled” burger has amassed a cult following. Each juicy, smoky patty has a grilled crust, is seasoned simply with salt/pepper, cooked quickly over high heat, and loaded with fresh toppings like lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, cheese, or special sauces for that classic backyard BBQ taste. “Their burgers are solid. Better than McDonalds and Burger King for sure,” says a Redditor. “Their burgers taste just like a burger at a backyard BBQ. I don’t know how they do it but it’s my favorite,” another adds.

    Portillos

Portillo’s charbroiled burger, featuring a 1/3 lb beef patty seared for a smoky flavor and served on a brioche bun with classic toppings, is a wildly popular Midwest burger. “I love the charbroiled flavor that they get on the meat! So delicious. Adding bacon on it is always a great option!” writes a Redditor. “Underrated – love the charr on them,” another adds.
